Millie to Alaska 9/21/08

We are doing the last cruise of the season to Alaska in a few weeks. I am wondering whether or not to book the shore excursions through the ship? Is there a big difference in price and maybe better excursions offered elsewhere? Does anyone have any suggestions of which ones to "not miss" on our 14 day cruise? We are interested in glacier tours and whale watching. Is one port better than the others for these activities.

Has anyone sailed this cruise in the past this late in season and can share info about weather. It appears to be in the 50's in most ports and very rainy. Is that typical for Late September. Is it possible at any of these ports to glimpse the Northern Lights, or are we too far south.

WE sailed 7/25 and it was cold rainy. We did some walk off ship bookings and were quite happy. Often had a 30% discount off the going rate.

Here are the excursion companies Ketchikan- Tamquan Air, Junuea Era Air, Skagway - White Pass RR, Icy Strait Galcier Wind Whale Watchng

Good Luck

Just got home today from a trip on the Millenium. Defintely recommend the Whale Watching trip in Juneau. Weather was the best of the season. Rained briefly in Ketchican (what do you epect in a rain forest) but otherwise dry every day.
