No Shore Excursion?

We will be in St Kitts in January 09 and have many excursions planned. We were thinking to just walk into town and do some shopping or sight seeing on our own. Is this feasible and worthwhile?

It is just a short(5-10 min) walk into town. There is shopping in town & sights to see. Have lunch at one of the restaurants that overlook the Circus, visit Independence Square, walk down to the local market near the ferry terminal.

We were there in Jan 05. Due to missing the ferry to Nevis (to meet up with my sister there), we just walked around in Basseterre -- there was a neat small glass shop (jewelry and dishes, plates, that sort of thing) and a Batik place that had beautiful clothing. Also an art gallery on one of the plazas that we liked. Sorry I can't give you street names, but we found it very walkable.
