taxi to Eze?

Recommended Posts

Wanting to go to Eze while in Monte Carlo. Trying to decide whether to take a cab on our own or book the ship's tour.

Questions:

Is it easy to find a taxi when you get off the ship?

What is the approx. price from ship to Eze via taxi?

How do you find a taxi to get back to the ship?

If anyone has taken a cab to Eze I'd love your feedback. Thanks!

Eze is not very easy to get to. Some will tell you to take a bus or a train. But it's not convenient in my opinion.

If you want to go on your own by taxi, you will need him to wait. There were no taxi's waiting around when we were there. There is a tourist office and a hotel there and they could probably call you a taxi. And it will not be cheap.

We took a very nice ships tour to Nice and Eze. It was not very expensive and we had plenty of time to wander around both cities.

The taxi situation in France is different than in most other European countries where taxis line-up to get cruise passenger business. In France, (particularly in the South) there are not a lot of taxis, and the drivers seem to have a very independent streak. We have been in French ports (such as Villefranche) where there were no taxis waiting for the passengers. And if you do get a taxi, be prepared to mortgage your property to pay the fare as they are not cheap. On our most recent cruise (last month) that stopped in Cannes, we were surprised to see 3 taxis actually waiting for cruise passenger business (on some previous trips there had been zero taxis). As we walked away from the tender pier into town, we saw two more taxis (out of site of the tender pier) where the drivers were happily having their mornng coffee and could care less about getting any business (at least not until they finished their coffee).

Sorry to disappoint, but whenever we are in Monte Carlo we simply rent a car (I can drive to Eze in about 10 min). But, there is a local bus route that runs from Monte Carlo to Eze. We do not know the bus number, schedule, or best place to catch that bus, but I am sure others here can post that info. As to the trains, its a real hassle, especially if you are starting in Monte Carlo. You first must get to the Monte Carlo train station which is a bit out of the way (you can get there pretty fast with a taxi or local bus). But, the trains (you want the line that runs between Monte Carlo and Nice) take you to Eze/Bord sur Mer which is at the bottom of the hill below Eze. You than need to catch the local bus (it stops right in front of the station) up to Eze, but that bus has an irregular schedule so you need some luck with the timing. If the bus schedule does not work-out well, you can cross the road to the cafe and ask them to call a local taxi. My advice would be that if you are in Monte Carlo, skip the train and find out where to catch the bus.

Bus #112 runs from Monte Carlo to Eze (and on to Nice). When we were in Villefranche, we took this bus from Eze to Monte Carlo. The stop in M.C. is on a street uphill from the casino (sorry I don't recall the exact location, but on this schedule, it shows it as "La Cremaillere" - http://www.eze-riviera.com/emotions/deplacement/ang/bus.htm

Thanks for the bus info! I would like to take the bus from Monte Carlo to Nice. I had read it takes about 30 minutes.

I think it was a bit longer than 30 minutes, but it certainly runs more often than the 112 to Eze. The bus to Nice runs very often and is only 1 Euro. You can catch it at the bus stop at the top of the casino gardens.

very well thank you...I am looking at the infrequent schedule of the 112 bus, there is no other way?

Surely we can take a taxi from monte carlo to Eze and then take the train to Nice ?

Kind of confusing when its your first time.

We want to take the train to Monte Carlo first, then the bus to Eze, then the bus to Eze, then I suppose the train or bus back...?

Hmmm.

Thank you everyone for the suggestions...just trying to make it clearer for myself as the days close in.

Keep in mind that the train doesn't go up to Eze, the train pretty much stays along the coast. It would be a bit of a pain on the bus with it's infrequent schedule. Where are you actually docking/tendering?

To take the train from Eze Village back to Nice, you would need to first take a bus (#83) down to Eze Bord du Mer where the train station is. It would be easier to take a bus back to Nice (I think there are 2 that go from Eze Village to Nice...#112 is one of them.) We went by bus from Villefranche-Eze Village-Monte Carlo and returned by train. By planning our trip to work with bus/train schedules we never waited more than 10 minutes.

I agree that it's confusing....I found the same thing when planning our trip, and finally got it when I read Rick Steves Provence and the French Riviera in which he describes the 3 roads that run parallel to the ocean (lower, middle and upper roads [corniches]).... along with some other useful travel info. It's worth borrowing from your library if you are going to travel independently in that area.
