Review: Carnival Fantasy 11-01-2008

Thanks for the review! We sail on Nov. 29 and I'm concerned about the sewage smell. Our cabin were in the bow of the ship and I moved them all the way aft. I guess that was a mistake!! I had thought that I read of the odor coming from the back of the ship. Do you think I should move back to the bow, we are on the main deck? Thank for any advice you can give me on this.

Perhaps Angel can clarify since her stateroom was on Empress Fwd, but I don't think the problem is specifically in the bow of the ship. I think it's coming up from a lower deck and permeating up the stairwells and elevator shafts. We noticed it anytime we were near the Grand Spectrum area, regardless of the deck.

I had the chateaubriand and mine was great...

Angel, I'm glad yours was satisfactory, but Paul and I both agree there's no way ours was cut from the tenderloin and it was tough. It almost seemed like it was eye of the round!

Great review!

All of our food was excellent. I had the flat iron steak twice and our chateaubriand was so tender that we didn't need our knives. Both were ordered and received medium rare to rare. I also agree that the chocolate melting cake was yummy as was the Grand Marnier souffle'!!

Our private party was outstanding. I slacked a bit because normally I have 4-5 drinks when the bar shuts down and I only had 2 this time. And I gave one away to someone that wasn't smart enough to order extra. :p

I love cruising and I love any ship that I'm on. I'm so happy we all got to cruise together again - and spend time together in New Orleans before and afterwards!

Oh yes, I almost forgot about that! That was the night our men thought we were lost or in the casino, when actually we were still at the table chatting away over cappuccino and dessert. LOL! Their loss for leaving early! :p

Empress deck was fine...but, unfortunately the Main and Riviera decks were not (according to others in the group who were on those decks)

We are on the main deck, but we had a choice of m50 and m54 in the bow or m239 and m243 aft. I moved to the aft cabins yesterday. I'm hoping someone can tell me which might be better.

I appreciate all the great info, It seems they've cleared up most of the other problems. I am looking forward to touring meridia, this will be our first time there.

The smell was worse towards the bow. We were in cabin M67 and it was very bad.

Our cabin is located starboard bow (front right) of the ship on the Empress Deck. Since we've made our final payment will they let us move if there are alternatives? I'm fearful we'll have a "stinky trip" in January.

Empress was fine. :)

The Spirit class, Conquest Class, and newer have an extra cost supper club.

Something to keep in mind is in about a year, Carnival is replacing Fantasy with Triumph in New Orleans. It doesn't have a supper club but does have many amenities that Fantasy doesn't.

And NCL Spirit does sail from New Orleans seasonally.

The Chateaubriand was outstanding on Splendor (although it had to be sent back one time for not being cooked medium rare) and I liked the flat iron steak, although don't order it well done like someone at our table did. That one came out black.

We were on the 11/1/08 Ecstasy that was docked beside you in Progresso and Cozumel. We enjoyed being able to look at your remodeled pool and slide area. We were envious!!!

We also had the sewer smell on some areas around the pool. It makes me wonder if it's something with that class of ship?

Thanks for the pictures!!!

And we waved at you all often! eman_hello.gif

I fully realize that the sewage issue can actually crop up on any ship; especially when pax clog up the system by putting stuff down the john that they shouldn't. However, I had not read about this problem earlier, but have read about if for weeks post-dry dock. Something is very wrong and needs to be fixed if it hasn't already. The odor was still there and quite potent our last day on board. Perhaps it's a venting problem as Jetskier indicated. IDK.

I do have a question for the Carnival regulars though.

Could someone tell me why Carnival doesn't enforce hand sanitizing? No spraying the hands when boarding the ship, coming back from port, eating at the buffet or dinner. Nowhere! Even considering it's flu season, I was surprised.

Or is that just a preventative thing that not all cruise lines practice? Have you ever seen it in practice on Carnival?

I guess if they thought that it would be effective (because the jury is out on that) OR if they were having a problem, they'd do it.

Personally I don't believe hand sanitizers are effective at preventing noro and think that thorough hand washing and keeping your hands away from your face is the only way to prevent it.

When they come up with a hand sanitizer that kills viral infection, I'll use it. until then, I think it's no more than a placebo in the case of cruise ships/noro. (that's jmo)

I imagine if they had an issue on a ship (as HAL just did on the Zuiderdam) they might go nuts and have the crew standing around with the spray bottles. But this would be to appease people more than anything else (also jmo)

My experience of the constant spraying on NCL last year kinda drove me nuts to be honest. I'd rather be in charge of my own hygeine.
