Wht did they close it?

We were on the Voyager last month. My wife and I were out watching the sunset. We had the whole observation area on the bow to ourselves. As it started getting darker a worker came out and told us they had to close the area.No reason why. I was wondering if anyone knows why they close it at night? I did notice it being closed on other nights also.

My best educated guess is that they don't have lighting, or at least not that much lighting in the bow, and it was for your safety. I know when I worked on yachts, we ran without lights on the bow, as the lights make it harder to watch the water.(because of the glare) Not that they don't use the radar for most everything, but they still like to have an eyeball on where they are going. It's a guess anyway, but then I have never been on that ship either.

Having not yet been on a Voyager class (Mariner 05) I am not sure of the area you are talking about, but as Bill says,On Rhapsody, there is a great observation area.It its VERY dark...But it has been closed occasionaly due to high winds.

(Hurricane Ivan comes into mind) but even one evening late in 03,they were closing it,as there were "expecting" high winds.

Someone told me that people go out there and to a Titanic! They don't do it in the day because people will see them and they might get in trouble. So rather than patrol the bow at night they just close it.

I would be interested in a more definite answer on this.

I found the open bow at night on Explorer to be one of the very best qualities of this ship full of great qualities.

I would be very disappointed if they closed it at night routinely now.

We were also told that if they expect high winds (I think in excess of 40 knots or so) that they closed the bow. With the ship's speed about 23 knots, it doesn't take much headwind to reach that condition.

When we were on this class of ship they held nightly staff parties. The crew is so big they need more areas to have enrichment for them. I saw one night the rock wall was closed off for the crew. I hope this is the reason because I feel like the crew is very deserving.
