Help! Fear of overpacking!

Recommended Posts

I'm sailing on my first cruise this Sunday on the Rhapsody for 7 nights and I fear I may be overpacking... Can anyone help me pare down my list? So far:

4 pairs of shorts
1 pair of jeans
2 pairs of slacks
2 pairs of khakis
1 pair dress shoes
1 pair of sneakers
1 pair of sandals
2 swimsuits
7 pairs of underwear
4 undershirts
2 pairs of dress socks
4 pairs of casual socks
5 t-shirts
4 polos
2 ties
1 sports coat
various sundries and toiletries (and duct tape, of course!)

I've been packing and repacking for a week now!

I don't think you are overpacking, but I think it will be too warm for the jeans and they take up too much space. Hope you have a wonderful time!

Maybe only 2 undershirts? Just for under dress clothes, right?

I don't think you have overpacked either. I too , would skip the jeans and rewear the khakis. I would also add a couple of extra underwear in case of sweating heavily while having a great time. You can always send things out to be cleaned if you run out. Try rolling the garments and placing them in ziplocs, especially underwear-pj's-swimwear,etc to save space. Keep your list for future cruises to save time later. You can revise the list after you get back.

Thanks for the suggestions... and yes, the undershirts are for under dress shirts, (3 of 'em) which I forgot to list... You can never go wrong with more underwear! Though I guess I could always go "commando", eh?

Hi krakrboy. If you rent a tux onboard ship, then you can eliminate the dress slacks, both ties, the sports coat, the dress shoes and the dress socks. I did this last year on the Disney Magic. They provided two shirts: one for formal night and the other for semi-formal night. It also came with two pair of dress socks and two vests. They were already in our closet when we entered our stateroom. This made for a much lighter suitcase than the prior year's...

Last 7 night cruise , my daughter packed 30 shirts !!!!!!!!!!!! we had a walk in closet. It was filled like at home. We dont have a walk in closet on our upcoming cruise. I hate lugging heavy luggage. Im packing light. I think you packing list is just fine! Bon Voyage.

Here's how I would adjust your list if you were my DH (I always pack for him, and he never runs out of clothes)

4 pairs of shorts
0 pair of jeans
1 pair of slacks
2 pair of khakis
1 pair dress shoes
1 pair of sneakers
1 pair of sandals
3 swimsuits
7 pairs of underwear
3undershirts
2 pairs of dress socks
5 pairs of casual socks
2t-shirts
4 polos
2 ties
1 sports coat
Your own snorkle and mask (fi you plan to snorkle... you can rent the fins & mandatory safety vest)
One smallish, EMPTY tote, packed INSIDE your checked luggage.
various sundries and toiletries (and duct tape, of course!)

- Because you are only wearing slacks for two-four hours in the evening, you don't need a different pair of slacks for each evening. Just take one pair for every two casual nights, and pair them with two different shirts.
- Polos can also do double duty... The same polo can be worn one evening to dinner and the next morning with shorts.
- Agree that you shouldn't need the jeans at all.
- Note that I have increased swim suits to 3... this is assuming you are more like me and can't wait to get YOUR body into ANY body of water that is within your field of vision at any given time. I find that with three, I USUALLY have a dry one to put on.
- If you pair last night's dinner polo with this morning's shorts, you won't need nearly as many T-Shirts... and you will probably buy at least one more with the ship's logo and one more in a port, so those can be worn if need be.
- Even though we are not shoppers, we still need more 'coming home' packing space than 'leaving home' packing space. I guess we just don't pack our "dirties" as slowly and carefully as our "cleans." The empty tote (we use a nylon carry-on type bag) is for just in case you need more coming home room than you originally left in your luggage - or to allow extra carry for purchases, booze, etc when disembarking.
- As was previously said, you can eliminate a few more items if you rent the tux, and you'll be one handsome dude, to boot!

Okay.. based on everyone's helpful suggestions, I have repacked minus the jeans and one pair of slacks... I have a mesh nylon that I will be bringing for dirties. As for renting a tux on board, I thought about that, but for the $85 I would have to spend, I could buy some nice booze!

You can cut down on the underwear and socks by turning them inside out and wearing them again....

Who wears socks on vacation???

Dump all but one pair of casual socks for rock climbing.

Come to think of it I don't wear socks when I'm not on vacation.

hi,
just a friendly note. please please do not have everything in a bag so heavy that it takes the breath away from the sherpa who lugs it for you!!lol. seriously, check with your airline to see if they have weight limits. most are 50 pounds some have 70.
thank you from your friendly tkt counter agent and your friendly ramp/luggage handlers
