shopping

I have heard there are two places to shop near the pier. A mall near the pier and then downtown. Is this true? Also, are both with in walking distance? If not how far are they and what does it cost to take a cab?

Thanks a lot!

If you berth at Havensight there is a shopping complex there and the downtown is a 30-40 minute walk away. If you berth at Crown Bay there are some shops there (not as many). The walk to downtown is longer, doable but not through the best area of town. Princess and Holland America berth at Crown Bay regularly.

There are two docks, WICO Dock in Havensight (east of downtown) and Crown Bay Dock (west of downtown). There are lots of shops in Havensight and there are some shops at the Crown Bay Dock. And downtown (Charlotte Amalie) is known for its shopping. Its about 1.4 miles from Havensight to Downtown. And about 1.7 miles from Crown Bay to downtown.

Thanks I'll be in havensight? How far is the shopping complex at the pier in havensight? Is that a couple minutes walk? Also what are the pros and cons of each? How long would it take to see the shops downtown at Charlotte Amalie and how long would it take to see the shops at the havensight complex.

Thanks!

The shops at Havensight are a typical outdoor mall mix of jewellry, souvenir liquor and electronics stores. Downtown is a different environment. Much more eclectic, and interesting in an old town narrow street atmosphere. Also a very interesting local craft market. Well worth the trip in.

Walking is impossible, too much traffic, construction. we took the taxi $4 per person each way! It would have taken atleast 40min to walk!

Just back from the Emerald Princess, and they offered a water taxi service for $10 per person on a Pirate theme boat (holding 48 people). For this price you could have unlimited travel from Havensight, Crown Bay to downtown and home every half hour. Not sure if the other lines offer this as an option-it was a dollar more than a cab, but far more enjoyable and you did not have to put up with the traffic!
