scubagirrl Posted February 18, 2009 #2 Share Posted February 18, 2009 How far is the straw market from Atlantis? Is a taxi required? What about going there after 6 pm, is it safe? Straw Market closes around 5pm .. it's safe while it's open. Taxi from Downtown straw Market to Atlantis is about $5pp. ($10 base rate) plus $1 toll. You need either a cab or a ferrie to get to Atlantis.. it's on Paradise Island.

scubagirrl Posted February 19, 2009 #4 Share Posted February 19, 2009 I was just wondering about it being safe? what all do you mean like what happens there after it closes lol? Once the market is closed, most of the town is closed as well. with the exception of a few bars, restaurants and clubs. Walking around a desolate town is not safe at night. Stay where there is action.

Nell123 Posted February 19, 2009 #6 Share Posted February 19, 2009 Or u could try the Bahamas Craft Center on paradise island & much cleaner/nicer than straw market, u will find the same goods & even more variety of goods than straw market downtown. u can walk from atlantis, near scotia bank. The Craft Center closes at 5pm as well. Yes, they have most of the same stuff. but the downtown Market has more "crafts' - wood carvers, artists etc. Downtown is also a few dollars cheaper for standard things like t shirts, sundresses and caps. Either would suffice.. during the daytime hours.

I think we'll head to the Craft Center instead.

Craft Center has the exact same merchandise. You just have to look thru and see what looks like real bahamian crafts and what's not. Straw market at least has the wood carvers and local artists. you're better off going to the Plait Lady.. on East Bay Street.. all authentic bags, mats, jugs, etc.

Yes, you can walk from the pier to the Straw market, It's just at the end of the wharf. As for the Plait Lady.. It's a shop with authentic bahamian crafts and bags.. The original on East Bay Street and Victoria Street is the best location, but Marina Village at Atlantis has another location. Plait Lady has straw bags, mats, hats, buckets, coaster and tons of other authentic straw.. they also carry other locally made crafts, pottery etc.
