We were in Freeport earlier this year on Island Princess. Grand Bahamas is really a nice island. You could check out the International Market Place, or do like we did, book a snorkel cruise. Had some of the best snorkelling ever, and we've done it in Cayman and Hawaii.

Not having been there myself, I can't give advice on beaches etc. But here are a few useful links.

Such a "charming" place. The biggest problem, Mon, is attitude.

A Miami area radio station once offered as a raffle first prize, a free one week trip to Freeport.

The second prize was for TWO weeks there!

Nuff said.

Stay aboard, and enjoy the amenities there.

Right where the ship docks you can pick up cabs to the Int. Market or to the resort/casino area. They have a new shopping area right at the dock also, nice little open air sports bar that has great drinks, a small carry out restaurant that delivers to the bar and has really good fried conch, chicken wings, fries and other things. We spent about 4 hours there just hanging out, drinking, and eating. Good relaxing place.

We were in Freeport last month while sailing onboard Brilliance, and really enjoyed our stop there. We went downtown to the International Marketplace, and went to the casino and the shops between the casino and the marketplace. We had no problems with the attitudes of the shop people, the casino people, or the taxi drivers we encountered. Everyone was pleasant and helpful, much more so than any of these same job descriptions in Nassau. Sorry we didn't get to any beach, but like Stretch said (hi, buddy, say hi to Carol for us), there is also a nice place right where the ship docks, with shops and restaurants. I was planning to just stay onboard as we had heard comments about Freeport, but we were pleasantly surprised by what we found.

we were on 3-20-04 NOS. We took cab to Port Lucaya. There are many cabs right there as you get off ship. I think it was $4 per person or close to. we just went to the beach right there at the hotel--i think it was a Sheraton. There are water sports ie waverunners etc.. we just played in the water, built a sand castle , people watched and walked along beach. no pushy vendors. but if you wanted hair braiding , trinkets etc they were avail at the shopping area across the street. easy to get cab back too.

We don't usually do ship excursions, but in March did their Kayak/Nature tour/beach trip and it was EXCELLENT. Kayak through a mangrove forest, picnic on deserted beach, nature hike thru Lucayan park. Small group, wonderful tour guide.

Hi back at ya Rita. Still having those identity problems, huh?? LOL
We actually liked Freeport more than Nassau too. Much nicer locals.
Oh, did I tell you we've booked the Celebrity Summit for next summer. The land tour starts June 5th for 5 days, then board the Summit for the 7 day southbound cruise. We'd love to see you guys again!

Stretch - congrats on booking the Summit. Bill and I will look at it, but we did that route just a couple of years ago, and I really want to do a Med cruise, but we'll see. You will love Alaska.
I know I have identity problems, but I think you have duplicating problems

I am not sure what people want in the way of cruise ports. People ask for new (not frequently used before) ports, and when one is offered, like Freeport, the advice is to stay on the ship. If you don't mind flying, there are many many ships and ports open to you. There are the islands of Hawaii, Polynesia, New Zealand. In addition there are European, Asian and South American cruises. If that is not enough, there are world cruises.
Now in the Caribbean, you are (of course) limited to islands that want cruise ships, that have accessible harbors. We seem to prefer docking to tendering especially to avoid the dreaded port cancelled due to sea conditions. Then we get to the islands themselves. Most Caribbean islands are third world countries. They don’t have the kind of infrastructure that American tourists seem to demand. So the question is, what do we want? If you believe that the ports offered in the Caribbean don’t include a specific island that has something to offer not usually found in Caribbean islands AND can accommodate between 2,000 and 3,000 passengers, mention it. Mention it not just here, but also to the cruise lines themselves. I know that they are searching for something new and fresh to offer the insatiable tourist market. RCI (or any other company) can’t just pull a new island out of a hat.
If you want other Caribbean ports of call and don’t mind smaller ships, you might consider either Windstar or Windjammer. Both offer some really neat smaller islands that the megaships cannot use. Just keep in mind that neither of these lines are known for sophisticated entertainment around the clock. Of the two of them, Windstar has a more varied menu and is more expensive. It also has very comfortable staterooms (no balconies.) Windjammer has 2 entree choices every night and meals are served family style. The rooms are a bit primitave.

Work like a dog. Live like a pauper. Save all your money. Then Cruise!
