pre-mixing drinks in rum runners?

First time Carnival Cruiser here. Do the ships have duty free shops where you can buy liquor? Why not just buy the bottle there instead of smuggling?

Great question!

There are duty free shops on board, but in general you cannot take your on board liquor purchases to your room.

There are duty free shops in port, but there is a flip of the coin chance you will have that held until the last day of the cruise.

There is also Carnival's bon voyage department, where you can "legally" purchase booze and have it waiting in your cabin for you when you arrive. You must call the bon voyage department directly for this service. It is not available online.

Cheers!

Because then they might assume I have something in my checked bag to go with it...

They could careless. They are only trained to care about the things that we aren't allowed to bring on.

One time I actually had a bottle of vodka just on top and breezed right through I couldn't believe it. It was in a brown bag and I had forgotten to hide it underneath some stuff. I have also noticed that if you don't fit the "spring breaker" profile or "young drunk" profile they really don't pay extra attention. At least from my experience.

I hope you figure out what works best for you.

I'm going to stick with the rum runners, since I already have them. As long as they'll be fine with the martini already mixed, I'll have just enough to bring what I want. I'll have the 2 bottles of wine in my carry on.

That's actually where I'm thinking of "pushing it". There are 4 of us in our party, I was thinking of bringing 4 bottles of wine. Though 2 of us are teenage boys, and naturally the wine will be for me, technically, I'd be carrying 1 bottle per person...no?

I'll prolly chicken out of that one! I don't want any trouble. But two bottles for 7 days...sigh.:p

I love White Russians so what I do is pre-mix the Kahlua with vanilla vodka in the Rum Runners and then just stop by the Lido to add some milk/cream or (even better) some vanilla ice cream. (The correct ratio is 2 parts Kahlua to 1 part vodka, is you're interested.) It's also a versitile mixture in that you can a bit of it to coffee or drink it straight over ice (in which case its a Black Russian, of course). Makes a good cruise drink since good things to mix it with are available 24/7.

I would push the envelope...:p Just act as casual as possible and make comments about hating to carry all the stuff for the whole family...;)

The rule is 1 bottle per adult pax, not per pax. Other options are to risk confiscation and bring 4 bottles, Bring 2 larger bottles (still allowed on the contract, I believe), or consider purchasing the new wine package onboard.

Since the OP is a rum runner person, this won't apply to her, but I put a bottle or two in my checked bags to supplement what I carry on.

If your sailing out of San Juan, there is a duty free liquor store at the

terminal where you can buy the booze, put it in a bag or your carry on

and carry it on the ship. As long as it is concealed, there is no problem.

Didnt it use to be 2 bottles per room instead of one per person? I was tihnking I'll carry two on board, and my wife will carry the other 2 on board....will they say sorry one per person only? Then I'll say yes, one for me on for my "friend". If they're like where is she I'll say she is meeting me on board!

I mean people generally package the two bottles of wine in one carry on, not one person each have a carry on with a bottle of wine, right?

I think I am going to try the 2 bottles a person thing and see where it goes...if it doesnt work, oh well, worth a shot...i am in the same boat as mistyinca.....2 bottles on a 7 day? With a balcony? oh no! lol

  • 4 weeks later...

For those that say don't bother with the subterfuge...... After 24 cruises, we got caught last weekend on a RCCL 3 nighter out of Port Canaveral. They confiscated and kept my 2 bottles of wine, bottle of Glacier Vodka and even took my bottle of sugar-free hazlenut coffee syrup..... We drink a Maryland made wine (semi sweet) that you can't buy anything remotely close to on board a ship. And my BF is allergic to wheat, so we bring him a potato vodka (which I've never found on a ship). And I don't go ANYWHERE overnight without my coffee syrup!

Like everyone else, we still spend quite a bit on booze. But even more lucrative to the cruiseline is the amount we lose in the casino.....

So, as a 50 something adult, I am tired of the sophomoric alcohol rules of RCCL. I know it's their ships and their rules, but we will book our 3 cruises a year on a more accommodating cruiseline from now on......

rum runners would have been the ticket for RCCL, but no need on Carnival except during spring break.

Cheers.

only problem I see with this is taking up valuable space with non-alcoholic liquid. gasp!!!:eek::eek:

I agree. One little mixture I like to bring already made up is Black Russian (2 parts Kahluha to 1 part vanilla vodka). Very useful - nice in coffee, over ice, or (my favorite) just add some vanilla ice cream or milk - both of which are always available - and you have a White Russian.
