Cruise Ships dock at Freeport Harbor?

Hi everyone. I'm getting so excited about the cruise!! I'm still looking at excursions that will be suitable for a 9 month old. So far I'm leaning towards Paradise Cove. I'm also interested in a nature, garden or historical tour (are they the beautiful colorful buildings?).

Anyways, I'm looking at doing these on my own and I'm Google Mapping (gotta love satelite view) and would like to confirm: Do the cruise ships dock at Freeport Harbor? Thank you!!!!!!!!!

Yes:

I will tell you that Paradise Cove is a pretty good drive from the port and is not cheap (for the taxi).... There is a small "straw market", bar and a eatery about a 10 min walk away at the pier... All "tourist" spots are by taxi except for those things right at the pier.

With the 9mo you might want to take a shared cab ($5pp) to Our Lucaya which has shopping/food/beach/etc.

Freeport (Grand Bahama Island) is more of a land based island for a vacation as it is spread out. Have a great time...

How long are you in port?

Thanks for the info, Bob. we are there from 7-2-- a very short time. I'll look into Our Lucaya. :)

Most of the shops are not really open til 9ish so no rush. With a baby I would leave around 9ish and be back by 12:30... plenty of time to see the ocean, buy a "gift" or 2 and still have some fun. BTW when going back just cross the street to the casino and get a cab in front of it... that way you know it's a real cab and not just someone posing as one. Better to be careful.

Bob- would you happen to know how much day passes cost?

If you mean for the Westin/Sheraton resort, I have heard around $15 if available...

It depends on the day/month/amount of guests staying at the resort/who you talk to/mood of the island/etc. Very Bahamian....

It is always good to get off the ship but if this is one of several ports, you might want to do the small market at the pier and have a wonderful day on the ship with your child and hardly anyone else...

Interested in Paradise Cove for Grand Bahama -- will be there w/NCL Sky in July. Do any taxis go there or do I have to do the tour w/the company? Its $35pp. But I have seen that you just have to pay $3pp to get in to the beach. Not sure if there are taxis that take us -- family of 4. Thanks!

Well as I told the OP it's not cheap to go to Paradise Cove by taxi as it is not a common place for cruisers to go to... I would do the cruise excursion at $35 and be safe... Paradise Cove does not have taxis just waiting around.

bobsfamily you seem like a wealth of info so hope you can help. We will be in Freeport in July from 7-3. Wanted to do an excursion with boys 15 & 17 , like jeep tour that included some good site seeing and beach for an 1hr or so. Have you heard of anything? Worried about the short time - that may just need to do a good beach with some things to do. Thanks!

What ship/cruise line are you on? I ask because most of the tours are booked thru the ship only... http://www.grandbahamanaturetours.com/ http://www.templetontours.com/bahamas/freeport_shorex.html http://bestonbahamas.com/grand-bahama-island-jeep-safari-tour.html The tour operators will ask you what hotel you are staying at and when you say you are on a cruise ship they usually tell you to book thru the ship... IF the ship finds out you booked the trip on your own they will ban the operator for a time to "punish" them...

Bob .Thanks for the info - I have always booked excursions through tour operators other than the ship ... the cost is so much less.. I guess Freeport must be different? Anyway cruising on Carnival and will look on the site for the excursions they offer.. Oh if decide to just go to a beach any recommendations?

What I was trying to say is that the Jeep excursion has only a couple of people doing it and Carnival has contracts that they have to abide by. GBI does not have a lot of tourism... compared to Nassau - and therefore are very sensitive to the wants and needs of the cruise lines. More land based tourists...

Now as far as beach... the majority of cruisers end up going to Our Lucaya, $5pp in a shared cab, shopping/food/bars/casino/beach. Beach is in front of Westin/Sheraton complex and some say you can get a $15 day pass, others say it depends on the day of the week... you can get to the beach by walking down the right side of the Sheraton on public road.

Have a great trip.
