We just booked the Star Flyer for Oct 4th inTahiti. It is leaving the area. We were on the Star Clipper from Athens Greece to Goa Indai with a Navy escort in Oct 2008 for 24 days. The 11 days will be a qick trip compared to the 24 days. Looking forward to seeing old friends again.

Hello Ed/Sue -- Hope you have a good time on the Star Flyer. We went on an 11 dayer in Feb this year. You sent me those pics of your destroyer escort. I sure hope we have the same assist this October. The pirates seem to be getting nastier. There was an article in the paper this week about a cruise ship off the coast of Somalia (don't know how far). The passengers beat the pirates off by throwing chaise lounges and tables at them! I hope the Star clipper has a good supply.......

We got cabin 139 in the back, we have had it before and since we don't spend much time in our cabin it will be no big deal. Are you going all the way in Oct ?? We had a 6 hr stop over in Dublin Ire. and bought a bottle of single malt Irish whisky. It just lasted 24 days with a drink a piece in the evening. We really enjoyed the numers of days at sea with reading a lot of book playing cards and drink beers and other mood enhancers in the afternoon with new found friends. If you would like to see more pics of the 24 day trip I'll send youa link to SNAPFISH.

Hello Ed/Sue -- Yes, we are going the whole 37 nites. We're in cabin 341 (a category 2) which will give us a bit more room and storage. Like you, we don't spend much time in our cabin but I think this many nites on a small ship will make space a bit of a premium. Thus far, our longest cruise was 23 nites on the Royal Clipper (Rome to Barbados). We have some friends who have been on a 107 nite round the world cruise on one of the Princess super ships. Not our kind of trip--just too big and impersonal. The best thing about Star Clipper's relocation cruises is the number of sea days. Hanging out with new friends in the tropical bar is a great way to while away the day. If we're not by the bar, then we'd either be in one of the pools or reading in the library. We have met so many great folks on the Star Clipper ships. Lots of adventurous and well-traveled people!

I'd love to see more photos of your trip. I was impressed by your escort and sure hope we have one of the same. A French sailing ship (Le Ponant -- a 3 masted schooner)) was attacked by Somali pirates. French commandos took the ship back but a crew member was killed in the process. The ship holds up to 60 passengers but none were aboard at the time. The ship was coming back from the Seychelles and was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

We are booked on the Star Clipper sailing from Athens to the Greek Islands.

Question: Are there any stops for swimming where there will also be snorkeling? Should I pack my snorkel and mask?

Thanks,

  • 3 weeks later...

The only place they offered snorkeling or diving was in Shar mel Shak. They may have offered more when they got to the other side of India. I read a lod of books, played cards and acquired many new friends from all over the world. The days at sea from Suez canal to Omar was about two but from Oman to Goa was 8 days. What great down time with wine drink friends recounting some of the best wines we had tasted from around the world.:)
