Early on in my crusing obsession, I'd occassionally check my email at the internet cafe on board, but I don't do that anymore unless something unsettling (ill relative or such) happens just before departing. Otherwise, I'm on vacation from the real world...and that includes any technology beyond my digital camera!

I bring a laptop and use it to check email, download photos, and all the other normal things. However, I like to work on my cruise review daily so that I have accurate memories of our vacation, and a good review that will hopefully benefit and be enjoyed by others. Everyone should post a review, I love reading them.
