DDBINK1 Posted November 5, 2013 #1 Share Posted November 5, 2013 I have been a bit bored today so I was thinking about Cunard and her three Queens. I think Cunard/Carnival needs to build a new proper LINER and give it a King's Name so that Cunard's Queens can meet their King. This Royal Rendezvous should probably happen in several world harbors such as Southampton, New York and Sydney. Any thoughts by anyone?? And I know this type of thread seems to repeat every so often but it is interesting to think it through.

But I don't think that naming a ship after a King would ever work since ships are always referred to in female terms such as a she and or her. This is an old tradition of the Sea that goes many centuries and remember that 2 of Columbus' 3 Ships had female names The Nina and the Santa Maria. Today someone like me could say something like the QM2 she is my favorite ship and the QM2 her diesel engines are powerful. If Cunard were to build another true Ocean Liner to supplement the QM2 my guess is that the new Ocean Liner would probably be named after one of the UK's previous Queens that never had the honor of having a ship named after her. HMS Prince of Wales and here is HMS King George V: I see no reason why there cannot be a Cunard ship named after the Duke of Edinburgh. A man who has dedicated his life to our current sovereign Edited November 5, 2013 by glojo

A man who has dedicated his life to our current sovereign But isn't it also true that the British Royal Navy is building an aircraft carrier and naming her the Queen Elizabeth? I admit that if Cunard did build another true Ocean Liner and she gets the name the Duke of Edinburgh I would probably would go on aboard this ship. Is the Duke of Edinburgh also known as Prince Philip? Regards,Jerry
stowaway2k Posted November 6, 2013 #5 Share Posted November 6, 2013 Just off the top of my head... Columbus Washington Presidents Hoover/Cleveland/Roosevelt/Wilson/Monroe Michelangelo Raffaello Andrea Doria Conte de Savoia REX The famed SS Normandie was androgynous... The French Line said it was neither female nor male.
DDBINK1 Posted November 6, 2013 Author #6 Share Posted November 6, 2013 They could name it the Prince Harry so it could be the party boat. It seems he knows how to party and could be god father to the ship?? Then the Royal Rendezvous could be the Queens meeting their Prince??

Is it common to have navy ships named after royalty? I know in the US they name them after former presidents, states, cities etc.

I know in the US they name them after former presidents, states, cities etc. Oh ye of little faith ;) We actually have an aircraft carrier at sea, fully operational but.... We do not have any aircraft to put on them!!!!! We 'gave' you our complete stock of Harriers along with spares that filled several large hangers click It would have been insulting if we received the amount claimed in this article but it was a darn sight less and now we are in the embarrassing situation of having an aircraft carrier without aircraft. Having said that the Navy has 'rebadged' this aircrafty carrier and given it the name 'High Readiness Helicopter and Commando Carrier'!!! Is it common to have navy ships named after royalty? I suppose we have only started to do this from the 17th Century, but since then yes it has become quite common. ;) Not sure where I stand on this issue as we all have our own ideas on what is right.. Ark Royal is a name always associated with our aircraft carriers and perhaps it would have been nice to have given this name to the second in class of our new ships? Regarding the name for any new Cunard ship, I think folks can see my thoughts and Duke of Edinburgh would be my choice of name :)

david,Mississauga Posted November 7, 2013 #12 Share Posted November 7, 2013 The last Canadian National Railways ship was an Alaska cruise ship named Prince George. It's a pity it isn't still with us - for more than one reason.
