Jeff, for Singapore, we'd like some nice walks, preferably close to the sea. I'm sure we'll spend some time shopping on Orchard Road. We'd like to try some local food, although one of us (cough!) isn't very adventurous so would prefer not to be eating snake testicles or eye of monkey etc...

We definitely want to see the Botanic Gardens and the pandas in the zoo.

We want to visit the Changi Museum but we're not sure how long to plan to be there.

Can I ask, do you tend to find it's a little cooler in the morning or is late evening the coolest time?

Planning to stay at the Ritz Carlton.

Hi ... really mad ....

just managed to lose all my detailed post ... only happens on CC ..... so I'm afraid it is a summary for you to google.

Baba House

Asian Civilisations Museum

Orchid Garden

The last two discount entry on production of photocopy of passport for over 60s, Museum $12 to $6 and Orchid Garden $5 to $1.

Singapore is 1 degree off the equator so it is the same day or night all year. No cardis. Just a brolly in case.

Orchard Road is a complete waste of time. Loads of malls with designer shops selling nothing cheaper than elsewere .... and no one actually buying anything.

We have never actually enjoyed any meal in any restaurant in Singapore although it may be that it might be better for hubby. However. Just go to a food court or hawker center and look for a queue. He can see before he buys. All stalls are inspected and rated for cleanliness and must display their rating ie A being top.

This is char siu and rice and consomme for £1.25 per person

DSC01546_zps417bcd31.jpg

Singapore is a large sea port ... so walks along the coast means looking at container ships. Instead walk around Clarke Quay one evening ...

This is a start ... there was more ... sorry it dissapeared.

Ask away.

Please visit Maggi. She has agreed to be Jean's replacement if something should happen to her. ;)

Maggi has this place to ensure all her family has work. She was very ill a few years ago ... cancer. She is now well. You will order food and she will reduce what you order because "you order too much". The don't accept tips. I have managed to make this BA crew's first stop off although when you go you will be the only non-locals there.

Send her my love.

Morning Jeff, flying to Vienna today. You have given me so many incredible options, can't wait now.

I certainly think we will love Vienna. I have always wanted to visit since I first saw Before Sunrise movie years ago.

You have been a great source of inspiration and a fount of information.

Jeff thank you for this. I do understand how frustrating it is to lose a long post, so I appreciate you taking time to give me a response.

I'm off to Google and will come back afterwards with some more questions.

Laughing at no cardis by the way, I don't do well in humidity. I'm thinking of Tokyo and Hong Kong in August and I suspect Singapore will be even more challenging than they were!

oh on the food pics, I don't post any because my offerings always seem to end up looking like slops when I take a photo!

Thanks Nigella, I'm so annoyed with myself because I know it happens and every so often I do a cut and paste to save how far I've got ... but being a pillock I didn't do it.

Baba House is a sort of genuine Peranakan house and I had wanted to see one of these or years and tracked this down. You can contact them and arrange a private tour. The guide however wasn't a cook and gave a lecture on how the cooking worked ... and I had to correct her about how you cook over open flame. She has now changed her spiel!

So far as food is concerned, I urge you to stick to "street food". We all talk about fusion food in the West but this IS fusion food. The Chinese stealing from the Indians, the Indians stealing from the Thais ... it is wonderful food. And the hawkers have normally specialised in a single dish for several generations and are very proud of what they do. It is both a culinary experiece and a learning experience. Singapore being so highly regulated means that food is very safe.

Some more food pics .... yesterdays lunch ...

Hi Nigella, yes Jeff's posts on Vienna seem to have that effect !!

Thank you for your well wishes. Off exploring tomorrow . Lashing rain today and arrived late afternoon so haven't done much.

Really really impressed with the Ritz here. I will try to post a little and if I can add some photos. Club lounge is superb for food offerings. Ate at hotel restaurant Distrikt whose chef is renowned here in Vienna. Unbelievable service , excellent food. The restaurant manager insisted I do a tasting of white Austrian wines to ensure I would get one I liked. Whilst doing this he organised for the barman to take the kids behind the bar to make kid cocktails. These were given free of charge.

At the end of our meal a Polaroid was taken of the three of us and given as a momento.

SchonnBrunn Palace & Zoo to see (hopefully) the new baby Panda.

Really beautiful city Nigella, I think I may have caught Jeff's Bug!

Luxury ...

Guess what! They have just replaced the 744 with the A388 on the LHR>SIN>LHR BA11/12 route!

Just booked the January 2015 "3 weeker" and plonked us into 2K and 3K but they have also changed us for our nexttrip later this year as well. I love that jumbo.

Well miss the middle seats in favour of 2K and 3K as usual

She was so good on the BA 737 SIM at Cranebank .... I've now got to book her a few hours on the 744 before they take them all out ..

Nigella,

Thinking a little more about your trip and your shopping.

May I suggest you go and have a look at Marina Bay .... all the shops are in the largest shopping mall you have seen ...much better than Orchard ... it is awesome ... and of course all air conditioned.

http://www.marinabaysands.com/shoppes.html

If you walk 500 yards to Newton MRT its 6 stops on the North South Line to Marina Bay Station and it's $S1.03 ie 50p each.

I won't post piccies of the mall ... just google it is amamzing. There is also a food court downstairs and this was a pic I took of the roast meats stall a couple of weeks ago ..

DSC01563_zpsb4b10452.jpg

Whilst talking about food ..... you really must go down to Satay Street at Lau Pa Sat one evening. Go to the low number 2/3 stall .... there are a dozen or more stalls all selling satay. Order a 40 stick mixed satay at $S24 (ie £12) and a jug of Tiger at $S18:50 (£9)

How funny Jeff,

I have booked our BA59 LHR to Cape Town in Dec 2014, it's still a 747

Seats 2K and 3K

I always like those seats,I have got them on the BA58 for the return in Jan 2015

Great minds. Apart from the odd 2A and 3A ... it has always been 2K and 3K.

What is dissapointing was that I hadn't realised that our last trip a couple of weeks back looks like it will be our last Jumbo. End of an era for us. Sad.

Everyone knows that that plane should never be able to take off, and I'll miss that cabin. On the plus side is more space and a tasting menu which looks a bit better.

I want to give Jean three hours in the 744 sim at Cranebank as I guess they will take it out ... perhaps we might have a couple of hours on the 388 when we can. She is a much better "pilot" than me and it'll be a great suprise for her.

I'm really going to miss the 744.

Thank you again Jeff. We're travelling with my brother and sister in law (Ravenscroft who also posts here) and her niece. Apparently Mr L has taken great joy in making Famous 5 comments ;) .

Unfortunately, I'm the eldest of the 5 but still have a decade before I can get those discounts you mentioned ;)

So at some point we'll all be off doing different things but we've agreed on the following :

We will see Maria for food. I've only just seen your post about Satay Street, I'm sure we'll get there one evening.

We'll all go to the Orchid Garden and the Asian Civilisations Museum

We're going to try for an appointment at Baba House on the Saturday morning at 11am, that's the morning we arrive into SIN and we think it would make a nice introduction.

Noted the comments about Orchard Road, and thanks for letting us know about transportation costs. Very inexpensive.

And I think that will be us just about done,we'll need another holiday when we get back :D

Never understood why so many passengers used to want 1A and 1K, they seemed to think the numbers were a status symbol but the seats themselves are not good IMO. Close to the wine display though  2A, K much better.

The 4 of us are very tempted by that Sojourn cruise at Christmas. Stand by for an update after we return from this trip, Vealmagedoon notwithstanding :D

The 1A and 1K thing is purely because they are only open to Prem, Gold and GGL until T-24 on BA and people presume that this will bestow wonderfulness and prestige by association with the seat. DYKWIA! It is generally an awful seat ... although on the 744 because of the shape you can see forwards ie where you are going. But with that comes that bleedin' wardrobe and no overhead locker and an unusable buddy seat. On the A388 you are essential almost out of the cabin and on the 777 it is the noisiest seats in the cabin.

By the way ... it is MAGGI .... :D

I do so hope you enjoy Singapore ....
