Rare Crew News Posted June 6, 2014 #3 Share Posted June 6, 2014 (edited) Going to be in Ketchikan on Aug 5. Trying to set up some excursions. Has anyone done the Wilderness Exploration and Crabfest? Do you recall the the cost? Was is worth the cost? Do you remember haw many people were on the boat that took you to the Lodge? Thanks for all your help!Any other suggestions would be helpful too! I will be on that excursion, purchased through Holland America for $162, on July 10th and will report back here as well as on the HAL forum. I did the float-plane version last year after the crab feast. With an open bar and all of the crab you can eat in 50 minutes, I was in gourmet and glutton heaven. I set aside all of the accompanying side dishes and devoured five half crabs. Here are pictures of the lodge and my initial plate of crab: http://www.rogerjett-photography.com/?page_id=1189 Note that this is the first serving of crab. Subsequent servings created a debris field around my plate and a large mound of shells on the shell plate. The crab was caught a few hundred yards away the same morning so it was about the freshest crab you will ever eat. As we proceeded to our small dining room (we had only six people since we were on a float plane excursion), I looked into another dining room that had around 20 people enjoying their crab feast. That was probably the number from the boat excursion. I would highly recommend the feasting portion and will report on the floating part when I return near the end of July. Eileen G Posted June 6, 2014 #4 Share Posted June 6, 2014 It always amazes me when someone digs up an old post. This one was from June 2010 so I'm sure the OP has gone on their cruise but to answer webeinky here is my experience. We did that excursion last week on Princess. When I booked a few months ago it was $149, right before the cruise it was $159 then on the ship it was $169. We really enjoyed it. We rode a bus from the dock to the lodge. The driver gave a tour the whole way. At the lodge you walk down 70 steps to the lodge and board the boat. Your guide tells all about crabbing and the crabs. We had a delightful guide. She pulled up two crab traps and you could hold a crab if you wanted. On the way back to the lodge the captain searched for wildlife but we only saw an eagle. The crab feast was delicious and we could eat as much as we wanted. We were in a room overlooking the water.
theloo Posted June 6, 2014 #5 Share Posted June 6, 2014 I appreciate the responses! This will be our backup plan if our floatplane excursion is cancelled due to weather.
lazey1 Posted June 6, 2014 #6 Share Posted June 6, 2014 Thank you to both Eileen and Crew News for the report and the photos. We are signed up for this shorex on HAL July 27th cruise and are really looking y looking forward to it. BUT Gary is mobility challenged and uses a walker full time. Those steps look impossible for him and extremely difficult for me. Is it possible to get into and out of the lodge another way?
Eileen G Posted June 6, 2014 #7 Share Posted June 6, 2014 They have a van that you can ride to the lodge but I think you need to go down the ramp to the boat.
lazey1 Posted June 7, 2014 #8 Share Posted June 7, 2014 Thank you Eileen. A short steep ramp with handrails of both sides we can both manage. Yeah, no need to cancel:)
