butterfliesfly Posted April 13, 2008 #1 Share Posted April 13, 2008 My mom heard that Alaska has some great deals on Opals!? I know possibly gold jewelry, but opals? I haven't seen this anywhere and was wondering if anyone can verify that this is what she should be looking for as her main souvenir in Alaskan ports. Thanks. HappiestWhenCruising Posted April 14, 2008 #2 Share Posted April 14, 2008 Hi, I have only been on one cruise to Alaska and that was last July. I don't recall there being Alaska Opal deals as much as it seems like Jade was what was available. And yes, gold was offered, but in my opinion, not at that great of a price. But then again, I believe gold has gone up in value. Lets just say that I'd of liked to pick up a piece with a gold nugget on it, but I couldn't afford it. I did get a jade necklace, though. Hopefully a more experienced poster will have better advice for you.
bearbait Posted April 14, 2008 #3 Share Posted April 14, 2008 Over on Creek Street in Ketchikan there is a jewler that sells opals from Australia. He also owns Poker Gold.

agabbymama Posted April 14, 2008 #5 Share Posted April 14, 2008 I didn't see Alaksan Opals, but I did find a nice little 14K gold ring with a piece of Mammoth Ivory, that I thought was unique and different, so that was my souvenir from the Yukon. I wasn't really shopping for jewelry, but when I saw the Mammoth ivory, I was intrigued. It's not illegal, like the other ivory is, so I actually bought the ring in Dawson City Yukon, then found another piece shaped as a feather in a necklace. Lovely set to come home with and didn't break the bank either. The websites provided by derf5585 are interesting, I hadn't heard that Alaska was noted for opals. wolfie11 Posted April 14, 2008 #6 Share Posted April 14, 2008 Alaskan Arctic Opal Jewelryfrom http://www.alaskaguide.com/akstore/arctic_opal.htm Alaska Opal Creations from http://www.alaskaopalcreations.com/ These are not "opals" as we normally think of them, but rather semi-precious stones. I don't find this stone particularly attractive but if you like it, they're not too expensive.
butterfliesfly Posted April 14, 2008 Author #7 Share Posted April 14, 2008 Alaskan Arctic Opal Jewelryfrom http://www.alaskaguide.com/akstore/arctic_opal.htm Alaska Opal Creations from http://www.alaskaopalcreations.com/ Thanks Derf5585 The arctic opals are unique looking, I will forward these sites to my dad, this is their 5oth anniversary cruise, and our 25th and my folks are looking for a unique gift/momento of this trip. I do think my mom is looking for the traditional opal, but I think she is looking in the wrong place. Alaska has many other items unique to the area.
