Not walking distance. You can take a cab directly to the jail or take a cab to Dublin and then take the HOHO bus to the jail.

We did a land trip to Ireland two years ago and went with the HOHO bus to the jail. There was a long line to wait on though once we got there.

Definitely worth seeing though.

Another option is the public bus.

Not really a good idea to walk anywhere from the Port of Dublin, since it is a busy commercial port with trucks and piles of containers all over the place, and no sidewalks in some parts.

Having said that, if you were desperate to get from the Port to Kilmainham Gaol by public transit, you could walk to The Point, which is a performing arts venue near the Liffey end of the Port, and also the terminus for the Luas light rail system Red Line. You could take the tram all across the city to Suir Road stop, and walk north on Suir Road, which changes to South Circular Road, for about a half mile to Inchicore Road, where a left turn will take you the Gaol. I have no idea what the neighborhood in this area is like, and in general echo the advice of a previous poster to take a cab, either from the port or from near the shuttle bus stop at the head of Kildare street.

I'd get the luas from the 3arena into abbey street then bus from oconnell st to kilmainham. You can take the hoho bus or normal bus. The number 13 will bring you very close
