Rent-A-Guide Posted March 12, 2007 #2 Share Posted March 12, 2007 Hi Meig, The "ç" is spoken out as a "s". This is a old Portuguese letter, seldom used anymore, I was told. rincewind3 Posted March 13, 2007 #3 Share Posted March 13, 2007 Meig, None of the above. It's more like Kur-uh-'sow (rhymes with cow)
Meig Posted March 13, 2007 Author #4 Share Posted March 13, 2007 Hehe, thank you! I could never figure out the correct pronunciation and I didn't want to try and say the name and look like a complete doofus :D

kari*curaçao Posted March 13, 2007 #7 Share Posted March 13, 2007 MeigI was told it's cure a sow- to fix a sick pig. Pat. Yes Pat! I've been breaking my head how to explain 'Curaçao' to you folks, and here Pat has given a good fonetic description! ...but we locals call our island "KORSOU" [cor-sow]. NorthTXRanchers Posted August 14, 2011 #8 Share Posted August 14, 2011 Old thread, but glad it popped up. I was curious ... asked several people and all (educated! LOL) had different pronunciations. Found this, thankfully: http://www.howjsay.com/index.php?word=curacao&submit=Submit
sjde Posted May 19, 2013 #9 Share Posted May 19, 2013 I say it almost like rincewind except instead of Kur--more like Coor (as in Coors beer!).
Isa65 Posted May 19, 2013 #10 Share Posted May 19, 2013 I say it almost like rincewind except instead of Kur--more like Coor (as in Coors beer!). Not quite. The first syllable is indeed CURE. So it really is CURE - AH- SOW (rhymes with cow).
OCruisers Posted May 19, 2013 #11 Share Posted May 19, 2013 Not quite. The first syllable is indeed CURE. So it really is CURE - AH- SOW (rhymes with cow). Absolutely ^ .... and rather easy to remember once you know how to say it. :D LuLu ~~~~

LEXIpoo Posted May 19, 2013 #13 Share Posted May 19, 2013 I asked my mother this the other day b/c Curaçao isn't too far from my parents' birthplace (Guyana) She said it's pronounced: Cure-uh-sow (rhyming with show, not cow) ...I was definitely pronouncing it the way that rhymes with cow. Isa65 Posted May 19, 2013 #14 Share Posted May 19, 2013 I asked my mother this the other day b/c Curaçao isn't too far from my parents' birthplace (Guyana) She said it's pronounced: Cure-uh-sow (rhyming with show, not cow) ...I was definitely pronouncing it the way that rhymes with cow. I was born and raised in Curacao and I still live here. So I'm pretty sure I know the pronunciation. It is CURE-AH-SOW (like COW)....
Isa65 Posted May 19, 2013 #15 Share Posted May 19, 2013 According to many, the origin of the word/name Curaçao came from the Portuguese Coraçao - meaning "heart". The pronunciation of the Portuguese word for Heart is Koor-AH-Sow (again, rhyming with COW).
LEXIpoo Posted May 20, 2013 #16 Share Posted May 20, 2013 Well the Portuguese people in Guyana pronounce it the way my mother said it's pronounced. Different strokes for different folks.
Isa65 Posted May 20, 2013 #17 Share Posted May 20, 2013 And where do all these people live again? Right. In Guyana. So, not here....:D

LEXIpoo Posted May 20, 2013 #20 Share Posted May 20, 2013 And where do all these people live again? Right. In Guyana. So, not here....:D And we speak Portuguese in Guyana so what's your point? I would think we know how to pronounce Portuguese words. Once again, different strokes for different folks...that is all. :)
Isa65 Posted May 20, 2013 #21 Share Posted May 20, 2013 And we speak Portuguese in Guyana so what's your point? My point is - I would never tell a native person from another country how to pronounce his/her country correctly. I know my country, its history, culture, background and yes - also how to pronounce the name of the country I was born and raised in. Also? There is a difference between "strokes" and Facts.... LEXIpoo Posted May 25, 2013 #25 Share Posted May 25, 2013 My point is - I would never tell a native person from another country how to pronounce his/her country correctly. I know my country, its history, culture, background and yes - also how to pronounce the name of the country I was born and raised in. Also? There is a difference between "strokes" and Facts.... Where did I tell you how to pronounce your country's name? I never said your pronunciation was wrong or anything of that sort. I just said how the PORTUGUESE people in my family's country pronounce a PORTUGUESE word. You just started getting excited and assuming this and that for no reason.
