There's no need for local currency though in port or in town (Mahahual) or along the malecon (beach walk). There are, or were, no banks in Mahahual. There may be an ATM machine in the port complex. arecent addition.

Thanks for posting this! We would like to get our passports stamped and was wondering how this worked. I guess I was envisioning them stamping them at customs but since it sounds like you just use your room key/ship card for getting on/off the ship that probably won't work.

 

It sounds like maybe the port's office can stamp or direct us to someone who can? Then again, having to go through all of that takes away some of the 'charm'. It is almost like a gift shop souvenir then! :rolleyes:
