rkersh409 Posted January 21, 2012 #1 Share Posted January 21, 2012 I was wondering if we will have Verizon cell service on the cruise to Cozumel? If so will it be roaming charges? Just wondering if I need to take both my teens cell phones to keep them from trying to use them.

rkersh409 Posted January 21, 2012 Author #3 Share Posted January 21, 2012 Just called Verizon they said $2.95 a minute, $20 for 1m for data, 50 cents per pic message . For those prices I think the phones will stay home.
Laughing Angel Posted January 21, 2012 #4 Share Posted January 21, 2012 Yikes! Really? Just checked the Verizon international Roaming page, and saw this info: Rate Information CDMA Standard Roaming Per Minute Rate: $0.99 CDMA Value Plan Roaming Per Minute Rate: $0.99 Text Messaging Rates $0.50/address sent $0.05/message received But if you spoke to them, and they said $2.95 a minute (plus the data and pics) I'd definitely lock up the phones! :D
PreciousCruiser Posted January 21, 2012 #5 Share Posted January 21, 2012 The only Verizon service I plan to use is texting and I'll make sure my phone settings are turned off, so I don't get any unwanted charges. While I'm in port, if there are any free ways available to make calls or use the internet, I plan on taking advantage of those. One time when I was in a store in St. Kitts, they let me use the phone as long as I wanted to ck on my elderly mother. I told them God Bless you for that! Good luck with the kids having to do without cell phones... :)
rkersh409 Posted January 21, 2012 Author #6 Share Posted January 21, 2012 I wonder why Cruise Ship Roaming is so much higher than International Roaming? maldenmusic Posted January 21, 2012 #7 Share Posted January 21, 2012 The last 2 times we were in Coz my daughter's Go Phone had service and she never was charged any extra minutes and she made lots of calls and texts. The first time she used it her phone display was in Spanish and last time in English.
Cruising Photographer Posted January 22, 2012 #8 Share Posted January 22, 2012 The ship rate is still cheaper than the $10/minute to use the phone in your room. Remember, there is a lot of technology installed on the ship to make those cell phone calls that only a few people will use, so the cost per person will be higher. And, it's a great profit center for the cruise line, especially when someone talks "unlimited" on the cruise, only to find out the international rates when they receive their bill at home. RedButterfly Posted January 23, 2012 #9 Share Posted January 23, 2012 I wonder why Cruise Ship Roaming is so much higher than International Roaming? I imagine it is a difference between land and sea. On land, there are lots of cell sites around to deliver that call, even if they aren't Verizon cell sites. I'm not even sure how the call would be delivered to you if you are at sea. I imagine it is probably costing Verizon more, so of course they are passing that along.
