Maramis recommendations?

Recommended Posts

We will be visiting Maramis for the first time this October. Wondering if anyone can make recommendations - is this a DIY port? If not, what would you suggest we might do? We are always interested in learning and seeing history....and of course just absorbing the experience - which sometimes is the perfect thing to do in port! THank you

If you can walk OK walk from the dock to town. You go through a very up market Marina with designer shops for the yachting fraternity then over a pedestrian bridge to a very attractive waterfront lined by gulets plying their trade (one option to take a trip) and waterside cafes with colourfully upholstered furniture and hammocks. A small fortune was spent upgrading the promenade area a few years ago so there are attractive water features, raised flower beds and all top end materials. The whole area including the cafe forecourts were all repaved. We love to linger here for a while.

The promenade and beach extends past Attaturks statue but if you want some beach time I'd suggest you make for Icmeler which you can see round the bay from your ship. Either get the dolmus or better still imo the water taxi (somewhere near the statue iirc)

There is a kind of fort (castle?) but rather insignificant and I don't think you can go in, it's more of a landmark/architectural feature than historical I think though no doubt had to do with defence at one time. You can climb up there up cobbled narrow streets and there is at least one cafe up there as we had drinks on terrace with good views.

The main part of town has little which we found of appeal but does of course have the 'Genuine Fake' bazaar! I guess some things are not fake too but it made us smile to see such notices in the shops.

Sorry no idea of what may be further afield of historical interest but we've been a few times and love Marmaris - our choice would be walk into town enjoying the area before the shops, a boat trip either on a gulet or to Icmeler which has lovely sand, plenty of beach furniture and attended by staff from the hotels which border the promenade.

Enjoy your time here. :)

You may want to consider a short trip to Dalyan. We have done this on a cruise and we stayed there on a land trip. It is on a river, and you will be able to see the tombs of the lost city of Kaunos. Also, there are hot mud baths. You can also get out to the beach and see where the sea turtles lay their eggs. Overall, it is a very interesting area.

Our favourite was hiring a row boat and travelling along the river to get a better look at the tombs and do some hiking. Google Kaunos and you it should pop up.

Not certain how many stops you have, where, or what your preferences are.

But I will say that Marmaris itself is fine, but so are Bodrum, Antalya, etc. A trip to Dalyan is very different than a trip to another fake market.

If you are going to Antalya and want something different take a look at Termessos. It is an ancient city, 40KM from town. It is a hike up but well worth it. Not many people seem to go. The architectural museum in Antalya is also very good. We spent four days in this wonderful city.....and we want to go back!

We were in Marmaras in late October of 2013. It is an easy DIY port.

We did walk along the promenade and went to the castle. It is a steep climb but with great views once up top. It also has a nice small museum with aritfacts I thought were very interesting. Even a small gift shop.

After the museum we walked through the town, did some shopping and had great lunch ovelooking the harbor.
