BillB48 Posted January 19, 2016 #1 Share Posted January 19, 2016 It really is suppose to be 2016 despite that the video is dated January 2015! Anyway it is just the usual recycled footage with only one minor change in the percentage of completion. Almost embarrassing lack of any mention of the repairs on the leaks and their progress or even more current aerial footage. Here's a link if you want a little deja vu all over again:o https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmh6BOrwZIQ On a subject that isn't a rehash... here is a short vid about the scale model lake they have built north of Pedro Miguel. If you are familiar with the area, the facility is on the east side of the Cut near Summit. Using vessels that are 1/25 scale along with tugs of similar scale, the lake will have structures in it to replicate the locks as well as particular areas of the Cut. This facility was patterned of a scale ship handling facility in Grenoble, France called Port Revel.

So is there a current official estimate when the new locks will open?
BillB48 Posted January 29, 2016 Author #4 Share Posted January 29, 2016 (edited) The first video is gone but the second one is amazing. Great way to train. So is there a current official estimate when the new locks will open? Hi Bill, I guess they must have taken down the video I linked to because it had the wrong date. They had tagged it January 2015, the video in the link is the same as the originally linked video, it just has the correct year now. As far as official, not a thing. The President recently made a reference to a May opening, but I do not think that will come to pass. The repairs to the leaky sills is supposed to be completed in January. We are still are in January, but there is not much of it left and there has not been any word on the progress!! BillB48 Posted February 4, 2016 Author #5 Share Posted February 4, 2016 (edited) Reuters is reporting that the Canal expansion will open in late June. The article seems to imply that the repairs for the leaks have been completed. http://www.reuters.com/article/us-panama-canal-idUSKCN0VD07T Another development, the filling of the water saving basins has begun on the Atlantic side's Agua Clara Locks. Northender Posted February 7, 2016 #8 Share Posted February 7, 2016 Thanks, Bill. :) We are going in April. While transiting the locks, will we be able to view anything that may be happening in regard to the new locks?
BillB48 Posted February 7, 2016 Author #9 Share Posted February 7, 2016 Thanks, Bill. :) We are going in April. While transiting the locks, will we be able to view anything that may be happening in regard to the new locks? If I looked correctly you are on a partial transit, right? As long as that is the case, there is not much to see while you are transiting the locks. Depending on how early you make your approach to Gatun Locks you will be able to see the new locks off the port side... as long as it is daylight. Not real close but you will be able to see the approach to the new locks as well as the new locks themselves. Are you taking any tours once the ship reaches Gatun Lake? If you are taking an excursion, most all the shore excursions will involve crossing the new locks on the Atlantic side... that maybe your best chance to get a glimpse of them.
