guava berry

Back in the late '90s, my parents took a cruise that stopped in St. Maarten. They brought back a few bottles of guava berry - a sweet, port-like drink. They said that it could only be purchased in St. Maarten. Is this still produced in St. Maarten and can it still be purchased?

Yes, and it is stil the only place to get it.

They have a kiosk right at the pier, but also a store in town. Very EZ to grab a few bottles on your way back to the ship. I always get myself a guavaberry colada for the walk back as well. Delicious.

If for some reason the pier side kiosk is not open, the big gift shop in the pier side mini mall also has it, but they mark up the price.

Guavaberry products are also available in almost all grocery and liquor stores (and many jewelry stores) across the island.

I don't recall exactly, but pretty cheap, I believe, in the neighborhood of $25 or so.

To me the basic Guavaberry Rum tastes much like cough medicine.

Also be on the lookout for Ma Doudou Rum. It is also unique to St. Martin/Sint Maarten and is sold in many stores, and their "factory" is basically a quaint, colorful, little hut on the French side. It comes in many flavors in hand painted bottles.

Guavaberry Rum and Ma Doudou are both considered "artisan rum" and by virtue of bearing that designation you can take back as much as you care to pack to the USA.
