Favorite Catalina excursion, things to do?

Recommended Posts

Will be doing a California coastal cruise next month, with the 1st stop being Catalina. Having never been to Catalina, would appreciate input on favorite excursion or thing to do in Catalina.

Thanks.

John

The water may still be warm, thus kayaking would be fun. The glass bottom boat is fun if you are not athletic. There is not very much to do in the fall in Catalina.

The cruise was great! If you go on the inspiration the crew is real nice. Just debarked today and here is the bad news...missed Catalina twice, so we had 2 sea days instead. Couldn't tender in.

Take the trolley up to the Wrigley Gardens. On a clear day, you can see the Mainland. There is a art deco style memorial to Wrigley and plants native to Catalina Island. Or take the Behind the Scenes tour of the Casino. The casino is the round building and it use to be a dance hall and movie theater. There is also a tour that goes to the inner part of the island and you might see the Bison that are descendants of the bison that were brought over for a movie and left there.

We have rented a golf cart for 1 hour and found it was enough time to do the suggested route we got from the cart rental.

Check out this website for more info on Catalina.

Also go to the California Coastal/Pacific Northwest board for more information.

If it real foggy or the water is choppy, you won't tender.

We were in Catalina one time and the Captain made an announcement that if we heard the ship's horn while we were on the Island, we had to immediately return to the dock and get back to the ship because the winds were picking up and the ocean was beginning to get very choppy. Luckily the horn never sounded, but we still didn't do some of the activities we wanted to do.

Google the Catalina Chamber site.

We like to play a round of mini golf and get some taffy at Lloyd's.

Last time we had some excellent pizza from the restaurant in the arcade. (We also played a game of mini bowling.)

The Casino has tours and the mini sub is good if the water is calm.

The Trolley is a good way to get around the island.

Mexican Riviera board has more info.

You couldn't tender in? Was that due to waters being too rough, or fog or????

It is behind Coney Island West (good food). It is located on Crescent (the street parallel to the water) & Metropole. It is behind Coney Island West (good food). If you walk towards the Casino from the pier it will be on your left and 2 blocks from the Green pier.

Just up from the arcade on Metropole is a Vons market.

My recollection of 26 miles across the sea to Avalon was everyone getting sick. The sea looked fairly smooth and was very choppy as it turned out. The two songs "Twenty six miles across the sea" and "I left my heart in Avalon" kept ringing in my ears as the four of us all threw up! That was 1991.
