Jim Avery Posted December 18, 2013 #2 Share Posted December 18, 2013 We're on the March 20th. cruise out of Barbados on SDI, and I'm wondering if the engine will be fixed by then - anyone know? I don't think anyone knows at this time. Week before last, I was told they were looking for a replacement crankshaft. March 20th is still a long way away so we could hope it will all be done by then. It was a non issue in Costa Rica but then the distances between stops was very short.
sunswimsail Posted December 27, 2013 #3 Share Posted December 27, 2013 It wont be fixed for our trip on January 4. Just found out about change in itinerary. Concerned about sailing across to San Juan.

JES4845 Posted December 28, 2013 #8 Share Posted December 28, 2013 Have been reading the engine postings with great concern particularly for those on upcoming voyages. Our trip isn't until August and. I had assumed oh well that is so far off surely they will figure it out by then. However, after being educated by the detailed postings of those who explained this in all its financial and operational aspects I'm wondering if this will be solved without taking SD1 out of business for a long time perhaps permanently. We had kids issues last August which prompted us to cancel the Costa Rica trip we would have been boarding today. We cancelled the Asia trip on SD2 for a variety of reasons but kept the August trip to Norway. We don't want to wait too long only to find out the August voyage isn't going or that the itinerary is dramatically changed due to engine issues. We already booked the flights so if we need to find another cruise or a land trip that fits those dates I would prefer to make the switch sooner rather than later. JES4845 Posted December 28, 2013 #9 Share Posted December 28, 2013 Cabosal, recall the owners son Andreas posted on the kids issues here on CC including a promise of more details on policy changes. That was several months ago and so far nothing but silence. I have tried several times via the Miami office at the highest levels to no avail thus far. We love the crew but I'm one of those increasingly concerned about how issues are handled as they arise. We were on course to do at least two trips a year but no longer. sunswimsail Posted December 28, 2013 #10 Share Posted December 28, 2013 So far all anyone at SD has said is it will be a great trip regardless of the engine problem and loss of half the ports. They gave us a spa credit??? Would love to get Andreas' attention? Does anyone have his email?
commodoredave Posted December 28, 2013 #11 Share Posted December 28, 2013 Just got off the Dec 14 CR cruise on SD1, and while we loved the experience, left feeling that the ship was in decline from a mechanical perspective. During the week, the ship had 3 occasions when the toilets would not work, and two occasions when the water was turned off. It was all fixed in short order, and because of the relaxed atmosphere on SD, most folks just took it in stride and laughed it off. But there is an underlying issue here, and that is these ships are very old and things are beginning to break down. This is going to require a lot of maintenance money to bring it up to top-notch condition. And if SD is going to survive, they really must start looking at a new build in addition to spending lots of money on the old ships. I thought Pam Conover, a Citi-Bank ship financing specialist who joined the cruise industry to bring new builds to Cunard and the Seabourn, was going to do the same at SD. After all, that is her speciality. But she lasted just one year, and is now gone. Which raises the question: Does SD have the financial wherewithal to secure financing for a new build or to bring the existing ships up to the level they need to be to continue as a luxury cruise line. These are questions that SD must answer by sharing their future vision with the travel industry and their existing clients. Until then, some will be reluctant to book too far out, fearing that bigger maintenance issues may occur, or that the line will run out of money to fix them. Our group of 8 just did our first SD cruise, and while we loved the experience, none of us booked onboard for a future cruise for the reasons stated above. My advice to SD is to address these issues as soon as practical as they are losing future bookings because of it.
cwaj45 Posted December 28, 2013 #12 Share Posted December 28, 2013 We were on the Barbados to Costa Rica B2B when the 2nd engine broke. During the first part of the cruise there were issues with the air conditioning in the dining room and main salon. This improved during the last part of the cruise, I don't know if this was related to the engine issue. We also had trouble with the toilets a couple of times during the cruise and other floors had more problems. This was always handled quickly. The internet was nonexistent and we didn't have satellite for the television the entire 14 days. I haven't seen any comments on if this has been fixed. On a good note the crew was as wonderful as ever, if not even better to make up for all the problems. We love Seadream and while on board we booked 3 additional cruises and already had a cruise booked for January 18. Now that January 18 is getting close and the engine isn't fixed I'm not sure we want to go. We haven't heard anything yet from Seadream on itineray changes or missing ports yet. We found on the last cruise when you move during the day the umbrellas can't be used around the pool and the sun can be really brutal. This is where we i like to hang out. Since we have already booked 3 future cruises the additional future discount doesn't appeal to us as we will not be booking any others. We have friends going with us January 18 that have only been on board once before in the med and really wanted to experience the caribbean on Seadream. I would hate for them to have a bad experience. I guess we will just have to wait and see what happens.
Jim Avery Posted December 29, 2013 #13 Share Posted December 29, 2013 Look at the bright side. The damaged engine, non working toilets, missed stops, etc. has made the ongoing discussion about kids and large groups on board go away.:D
