sailinguk Posted August 30, 2015 #1 Share Posted August 30, 2015 I'm hoping to go on a cruise which will offer me the chance of whale watching. Can anyone recommend the best areas to cruise in and the best time of the year to go? Are you able to whale watch whilst cruising in Europe? Thanks for any advice you can give. seadancer Posted November 28, 2015 #2 Share Posted November 28, 2015 (edited) Alaska in the summertime look for ships that go to Icy straight point. That I know of Celebrity inside passage ships go there. Millennium and Infinity for sure. Southern Caribbean cruises headed to Dominica will get your whales also year round. Just remember it is Mother Nature so she may or may not cooperate. Edited November 28, 2015 by seadancer
PABirder Posted January 14, 2016 #3 Share Posted January 14, 2016 (edited) Back in 2007, I was on an Alaska cruise and we stopped at Icy Strait Point (a.k.a. Hoonah). Went on a whale watch trip there and saw quite a few fin humps from humpbacks. Then while having dinner sitting by the window at one of the specialty restaurants, we saw humpbacks breaching all over the place right in the bay! Also, Maine/Nova Scotia cruises may also have whale watching. Edited January 14, 2016 by PABirder
hvbaskey Posted March 28, 2016 #4 Share Posted March 28, 2016 (edited) Just caught this thread now, so thought I would share my experiences. Both cruises along the Pacific Coast to Puerto Vallarta were fantastic for seeing whales/dolphins along the way from December through to March (ish). Hot spots are just prior to and around Cabo San Lucas (migrating greys and humpbacks) and also Banderas Bay (Puerto Vallarta) for Humpbacks. If you have a sharp eye and a good pair of binoculars (and patience); you could have spectacular sightings (we did!). Camlilia Posted January 22, 2018 #5 Share Posted January 22, 2018 I would love to go to such cruise too. However, I'm not sure which season is the best and cheapest for whale or shark watching. I hope next year I will have the chance to go on a cruise with my friends.
Charles Mason Posted January 23, 2018 #6 Share Posted January 23, 2018 Western Australia's Kimberley Coast has one of the world's largest humpback migrations each August / September, something like 30,000 whales. Lots of small ship expedition cruises of several nights in length, so not cheap, but excellent trips. Here's a website with a few different ships featured: https://www.kimberleycruisespecialists.com.au . Also in Western Australia you can do Whale Shark cruises during May/June at Ningaloo Reef, where you can swim with them, and also the same is offered on cruises in Cenderawasih Bay in West Papua. Again smaller ships, I know True North the expedition ship does trips there.
SMNYCruise Posted February 22, 2018 #7 Share Posted February 22, 2018 Uncruise has a cruise in the of Sea of Cortez. We saw grey whales (including a baby) up close, humpback whales, and the elusive blue whale.
Trueblueky Posted May 20, 2018 #8 Share Posted May 20, 2018 Kenai Fjords National Park, near Seward Alaska, is where we saw humpback whales, a gray whale, and three pods of orcas, as part of an HAL cruisetour. Each pod of orcas was 10-12 individuals.
