5kitty Posted July 2, 2017 #1 Share Posted July 2, 2017 We booked our upcoming November NCL cruise in February. Our final payment isn't due until late August and we have no plans to pay it until then. We have cruised in the past and always paid the insurance with the final payment. However, as we are not getting any younger, we are wondering if there is any reason we should pay the "insurance portion" of our cruise fare earlier than the final payment is due. klfrodo Posted July 2, 2017 #2 Share Posted July 2, 2017 Pre-existing conditions waiver. If you have any current medical, mental, or prescription issues,, anything that could happen on the ship medically could put you at risk for denied coverage. As of right now (assuming you are from the States), there is only 1 company that I'm aware of that will provide coverage with a waiver for pre-existing conditions with payment made just prior to final payment date. Others require the insurance to be purchased 14 to 21 days after initial trip deposit.
cherylandtk Posted July 2, 2017 #3 Share Posted July 2, 2017 Another reason to purchase insurance now is 'future conditions'. Purchasing now covers anything new that happens between now and final payment. Say you get a bad summer cold at the end of July. You cannot shake it, it turns into bronchitis around the time of your August final payment, and then becomes pneumonia. You are eventually hospitalized and the doctor says you cannot take the November trip. If you had purchased the insurance before catching the cold, it is not excluded as a pre-existing condition since you had the insurance first. Otherwise, anything that happens in the lookback period (30,60,90 days or more before buying the insurance) becomes a pre-exisiting exclusion.
