Past WCers a question re: overnights of the ship

We are thinking of spending a night or even two off the ship. This would be between two ports or during one of the WC's overnights in port. My question is have you done this before?

We are throwing the idea around of renting a car in South Africa or taking a tour between two ports?

Have any of you played hooky on the cruise?

I have not done this but we know others who have.

Be sure that you coordinate this with the front desk personnel while on the ship.

We did a 48 day cruise from Rome to Sydney. Quite a few people got off for a couple days in Indai for the Taj Mahal and again later for a trip to Ankor Wat. These were ship excursions but could be done independently. If planning to do your own side trip between ports make sure the ship is aware so there is no issue at the ships departure time from the first port.
