merryecho Posted February 24, 2006 #1 Share Posted February 24, 2006 We will have our 13 year old daughter along on our next cruise, and she sometimes likes to watch a movie in the room after dinner while Dad and I go to the lounge or casino for a while. Is there a DVD/video player in the room, or she should she bring one? Are there movies available to rent/borrow? (I see the mariners club plays movies, but I don't think it will be operating during our trip, even though it is spring break, march 20-29). Also, are there movies played on the ships TV channels? Are they new or old, and how often are they changed? Thanks for any info.
ChatKat in Ca. Posted February 24, 2006 #2 Share Posted February 24, 2006 There are constantly playing movies on the closed circuit TV, but also in the library are a number of movies that can be checked out for viewing in the room, perfect for what you are asking about. They have upgraded the rooms to DVD since I've been onboard Mariner in 2003
blackbird71 Posted February 24, 2006 #3 Share Posted February 24, 2006 Right and when they had VHS they had a good selection and I would expect with the smaller size they will have more DVD. Everything is on the Honor system. Just go return you old ones and pick new. Easy. As for the online movies, you will get a time schedule in your suite of the movies being shown and that days and times. I would expect your DVDs from home also would play so if she needs a fix of movie xyz..... I think I like your daughter, now does she like to stop the movie and just sit on the veranda for 1/2 hour at a time. :) I NEVER made it to a show. That was my after dinner enterainment on my Mariner cruise. :p
jdc Posted February 24, 2006 #4 Share Posted February 24, 2006 merryecho: there are, I believe, three movie channels on the Mariner. Times and movies vary daily....
merryecho Posted February 24, 2006 Author #5 Share Posted February 24, 2006 Thanks so much to everyone- just the information I needed. My daughter is pretty self sufficient, but I really enjoy spending time with her too. As a mom I would just as soon spend every evening with her watching the water, but there is that wife thing, and dad likes going out, so I take turns. blackbird71 Posted February 24, 2006 #6 Share Posted February 24, 2006 I forgot there is one problem with the movie library It is outside the email place and there is a wonderful coffee machine on the right behind the table. As for the food... I never figured out when it was out but they sometimes had goodies to eat while you picked your movies. On the left of the picture is the XYZ movies. (VHS then)

merryecho Posted February 24, 2006 Author #9 Share Posted February 24, 2006 Thanks blackbird- even the light and healthy menu sounds fantastic. If I can just make it past that big mountain of pastry.
blackbird71 Posted February 25, 2006 #10 Share Posted February 25, 2006 First I will say I did not gain any weight in 12 days. The portions that RSSC are small and I did not ASK for any additional calories at dinner. At breakfast and lunch I controlled myself  The only large piece of meat at dinner( I did not order it that night) was the Prime Rib. But I did leave out this, which happened one afternoon... :D
merryecho Posted February 25, 2006 Author #11 Share Posted February 25, 2006 I guess with enough exercise you can walk off anything. How many hours on the treadmill do you think it would take to walk off a piece of the chocolate book?
ChatKat in Ca. Posted February 25, 2006 #12 Share Posted February 25, 2006 Some cruiselines have the Midnight Buffet. RSSC has the Chocolate tea on the Mariner, Navigator and Voyager. They are amazing to see what they can do with chocolate. It's a do not miss. Edible Chess boards and pieces, Ships, a world globe on the leg of the World Cruise. Oh and anything you can think of in the way of chocolate desserts - brownies, mousse, pies, pastries, Chocolate creme brulee, cookies, - all beautiful. On one cruise, the pastry chef made a most incredible bird, I think it was an Eagle, which she had a sign on for people not to take. Someone broke off the wings - I think her heart was broken to see her beautiful chocolate sculpture broken.
merryecho Posted February 25, 2006 Author #13 Share Posted February 25, 2006 Do they make antabuse (the drug that makes alchoholics not crave alcohol) for chocolate?

Merryecho, I was recently on the Mariner (Nov-Dec 2005 for 32 days) and they have an extensive DVD library, including a large collection of DVD's for children/family entertainment. You are permitted to borrow three titles at a time from the main reception and can return each at any time for another replacement. There are several movie channels that play a featured title each day, which are usually current new titles, and they rotate those titles every 14 days. You can bring your own DVD's and they will play on the DVD player in your cabin. They also have a "popcorn" feature every day that plays on the big screen... so your daughter should be well entertained. I will be back on the Mariner in April for the Hawaii/Tahiti SF to SF. I've already started counting the days.... Have a wonderful time! Ron
dave415 Posted February 26, 2006 #15 Share Posted February 26, 2006 Hi, I've got a few quick questions on Mariner: Is there space for luggage storage under the beds in D suites? Are laundry supplies...supplied. By the ship that is. Do laundry products need to be a special formulation for marine disposal/wastewater treatment. i.e. are we allowed to use chlorine bleach? We're on a 27 day cruise, do we need to be concerned about alternative dinner reservations on embarkation day or will there be plenty of time for that later? Does anyone have experience with the new shower stalls on Mariner, is there perhaps a bit more headroom in these than the original bathtub/shower combo.? Last but not least, has anyone had luck with embarkation day suite upgrades? Thanks very much for shedding some light.:) I'm so excited I could burst. blackbird71 Posted February 26, 2006 #16 Share Posted February 26, 2006 From the guy that came home from a 12 day Amazon cruise with all clean clothes. I know a little about the self-service laundry on the Mariner. :D There are three stacked Magtag Netune in each laundry. They provide the soap by way of a button on the front of the machine. Whatever you do, do not dial in pre-wash, and extra rinse cycles on the same load, that is around 1 hour and 20 minutes of washing :eek: I do not know if you can beach in those washers. There is a strange iron in the laundry room that I almost think you have to take a class to use. :p Yes I put my luggage under the bed in my cabin. There will be a lot of time for reservations once the cruise starts. IMHO UNLESS you have to have one on a Special night like your birthday. dave415 Posted February 26, 2006 #19 Share Posted February 26, 2006 Thanks Joanna, this is the longest cruise we've been on and I'm going to have to learn a whole new maritime housekeeping skill set.:)
cruiseluv Posted February 26, 2006 #20 Share Posted February 26, 2006 Dave don't worry, you'll be fine! Even I could use the Rowenta! BTW, what cruise are you on?
blackbird71 Posted February 26, 2006 #21 Share Posted February 26, 2006 dave415 Another laundry note  I brought a pop-up laundry basket for $2.50 at Walgreens. It is very small when folded and fits in your luggage without a problem. Once onboard I used it for laundry and at the end of the cruise just left it in the suite. dave415 Posted February 26, 2006 #22 Share Posted February 26, 2006 Thanks everyone, the hamper's a great idea. Cruiseluv, we're on the 26-nt South Pacific roundtrip from San Francisco, looks like Ronsex is going as well. Hi Ron.

jhp Posted February 26, 2006 #24 Share Posted February 26, 2006 Dave, I'm sure you will get to know the Rowenta if you are on a cruise that long. Actually, it was Joanna's husband doing the ironing who fell in love with it. He is apparently a master of ironing now, and had quite a social good time with the "ladies in the laundry" who were helpful with his questions. He came home and had to have that iron! joannapvb Posted February 26, 2006 #25 Share Posted February 26, 2006 Yes my husband became "ironman" after his experience with the Rowenta. I also have found (for long cruises) the clear plastic shoe bag (Martha Stewart K-Mart $8) invaluable. Hang it on inside of bathroom door (or outside) and great for meds, toiletries, jewelry, all sorts of little items that make your bathroom, living area messy. And since it is clear plastic you spot your things asap!! - best $8 I have spent for long cruise - Joanna
