Cell phone coverage on the ship

I searched for info and found some real old posts so asking again. Do we have any cell phone coverage on the ship thru the island towers or should I switch it off like on other cruise ships ?

Which islands are you referring to? In Hawaii you should be able to get signals while in port or near port.

I'm asking when I'm on the ship sailing between islands. Are the islands close enough that we can get coverage on the ship or should I turn off the phone so as not to incur roaming charges

I would leave it off until docked. Sailing will be in evening and overnight anyway.

It depends on what ship you are on. Most ships, will turn their cell tower on within minutes of leaving the dock, and regardless of whether there is a shore tower nearby or not, the ship's tower is closer, and unless you set "no roaming" it will connect to the ship's tower. NCL's Pride of America does not have a cell tower, so you could leave roaming on, but while at sea you might not get a signal.
