Galveston - Hilton or Doubletree?

We'll be staying in Galveston 2 nights pre-cruise and are thinking about staying at the Hilton or Doubletree (both on Seawall). We'd like the area to have plenty of restaurants and bars within walking distance along with being in a good area for any beach time. We've never cruised out of Galveston, so I'm also unsure if there are certain areas that are considered safer than others for tourists.

I read on these boards that the Hilton offers a free shuttle to the port, so if anyone knows if the Doubletree does as well that would be great.

Thanks for your help!

We've stayed at the Hilton several times. It's a very nice hotel, but pricey. There is an iHop and another restaurant a very short walk away... and it is right across from the beach area.

If you plan to take the shuttle, you need to book it as early as possible. The shuttle times fill up quickly, and you'll be left with a late afternoon time slot

And just for reference, a cab ride from the Hilton to the pier is only about $15 and a short ride

:)

Galveston is a tourist destination.

Galveston's accommodations pricing is relevant to high/low seasons, summer vacations, weekend/weekday rates, many special events , migrating winter Texans, and spring breakers, etc .

Accommodations include many vacation rentals, bed and breakfasts , hotels and motels . New ones are being built every day.

Pricing can be very competitive depending on the day of the year.

Do you homework!

We have traveled and cruised extensively in the world.

Galveston has a lot to offer in enjoyable FUN.

And more offerings than some of the ports you will even be visiting.

Galveston is a tourist destination with multiple various types of activities!!

Come and stay a while before or after your cruise, you will not be disappointed. :)

Doubletree is new, Hilton is 33 years old. You can tell a clear difference. Our friends love the Doubletree when they come down. Believe he has a local transfer vehicle also?

The Doubletree is nice newly remodeled hotel, but an old hotel. Owned by Spot owner Dennis Byrd.

Hilton is nice newly remodeled hotel but old hotel also , and with fairly new section building addition . Owned by Landrys which owns about 600 restaurants hotels and venues around US. In Galveston Owns the Hilton , San Luis and Holiday Inn Resort along with restaurants in Galveston - Intl. House of Pancakes , Steakhouse, Grottos , Fishtails, Fishermans Wharfs, Willie G's , Saltgrass , chick filet , Bubba Gumps and the venue Pleasure Pier. And operates the convention center next door.

The hotel limo will move you to from all venues around island.

We have stayed at both. As others have said, the Hilton is next to the San Luis, which has a good steak house in it, and has Rainforest Cafe, Landry's and IHOP all within it's immediate vicinity. Doubletree has an open air restaurant in front of it that serves typical pub/bar food and has a couple of other restaurants close by. It is closer to the Pleasure Pier than the Hilton, but the Hilton does offer a package to the Pleasure Pier that also includes transportation. Both have a nice pool, although the Hilton's has a swim up bar. The Doubletree was renovated recently and has a retro feel to it, the Hilton is fairly typical for a Hilton. We liked both but got a much better price at the Doubletree.
