Pearl to Alaska cruise of a lifetime review! 5/31 - 6/7

Recommended Posts

Hi All! My Dad, BF and I just returned from our Pearl cruise to Alaska today! I'm planning on doing a detailed review as possible, however, I won't be able to do pictures for two reasons. 1) I didn't get as many pics as I wanted, especially of the ship itself and 2) my laptop is seriously malfunctioning, it has a virus or some other stupid computer thing going on with it. Therefore, I'm going to be doing this entire review on my IPad, and I can't get pictures on it from my SD card. I totally spaced taking notes everyday ( as you will discover farther into the review, I was a complete space cadet on this cruise, BAD :o:D), so I'm sure here are a few things I forgot. That being said, I welcome, even BEG you all to ask me questions, to help jog my memory. Any of you that may have been on this cruise, please feel free to interject if there is something I forgot to add, or maybe have a little tweeked, because as I said, I forgot to take notes lol. All in all, it was great to spend time with my dad, as he lives in North Carolina, and I only get to see him every few years or so. However, there were a few things that just seemed to fall short on this cruise, and some that were flat out disappointing, and others that were absolutely FANTASTIC! I'm hoping to start full swing into the review tomorrow, as I still have some unpacking to do and a few things to catch up on. Please be patient with me through this, as I work a lot of over time and also have other nuisances that keep me off of CC :D. So please sit back and enjoy the adventure to come!

I too look forward to your review....we sail from Seattle on July 26th - Group of 4!

I'm especially interested in the food (as always), and the entertainment on board. Were there any shows that are "must see?" Or any that are not worth the trip?

The cruise director and his staff can make a huge difference too! Are there any memorable crew members that made your trip special??

What type of cabin did you have? 2 of our group are in a balcony, and the other two are in an oceanview.

So first off I'll tell you a little bit about our group, it was my Dad, my boyfriend and I. I'll introduce myself first. I'm 32 years old, and a country girl to the core ( except for the music, I HATE country music! ), I have a horse that I've raised from birth and am starting to ride him. I enjoy hunting white tail deer and fishing, camping and a good old bonfire. Also, in our house, we love demolition derbies! My boyfriend had usually runs one once or twice a year and I will too if I have an opportunity. What a rush! It's awesome! My boyfriend is 44 years old, and is also the outdoorsy type he enjoys country music though lol. He likes to hunt elk, deer, bear and has even killed a cougar and a few wild turkeys. Dad is 75 years old, and a retired navy man. He's very easy to entertain and get around really well for his age. He loves nature and beautiful scenery, and most of all, being at sea! This cruise was pretty much for him, so I figured this would be the perfect itinerary for him. We only get to see each other once every few years, so our time together is very precious to us. So now that you know a little bit about us, let's begin at the beginning! The next post I will try to detail our arrival and day in Seattle.

A little disclaimer first. What I review will be our experiences and opinions. Somebody else may have different views, or experiences. I will try to be objective as possible, but will give my opinions as well. I hope you all enjoy!

We flew to Sea Tac from Spokane since we live in Idaho, on May 30, the day before our cruise. It's only an hour long flight, but I'm paranoid about something stupid happening with planes and what not. I always say, better safe than sorry! We dropped my car off at the parking area we always use, and they took us to the airport. I'm going to stop here and talk about these folks for a minute in case there might be other folks on here using this airport. We always use Spotted Road parking. It usually costs us $5 a day ( including tax) for valet parking. There lot is secure and surrounded by a fence and there is always somebody at the gate. They have a very clean van that they shuttle you in, and are always very friendly. When we arrive, they are ready to go, and within two minutes of leaving my car with them, we are loaded up in the van and headed to the airport. When we get back, the have the car out waiting for us, either warm in the winter, or windows down and visor across the windshield in the summer. Just really great people. We arrived at 7 am and we were at the airport at 710 am for our flight at 830. Getting through the Spokane airport is so easy, from the time we arrive to the time we're waiting at the gate is usually about 15 to 20 minutes. Our flight left on time and we arrived in Seattle 45 minutes later, so we actually arrived early. We usually just take a carry on each when we travel, but decided to take extra clothes to prepare for the weather ( BF decided to take his hunting boots just incase lol), so we checked a bag. We headed for the baggage claim and had our suit case within 15 minutes. We knew Dad was coming in soon from North Carolina. We checked the incoming flights and found out his flight was also early by about 20 minutes! Yay! I'm going to pause here to give you an example of how absent minded, forgetful and spacey my Dad and I are. He said he had a green carry on that they asked him to check due to his flight being completely full. So we're standing there looking and looking for a green carry on. Then he says, " think that's it right there ". I look and see a blue one. "Um Dad, that's a blue one". Then he says " maybe it was blue". Looked at the receipt on the tag, yep, it was his lol. Just typical for both he and I, and that is just the beginning of our escapades lol.

We decided to use the light rail to get downtown. There are signs all over showing the way to get to the light rail station, very very easy to find. Once we got to the ticket booth, there was somebody there helping people figure out where to go, and what stations to get off at. Tickets for the three of us were $9. The light rail usually goes all the way down to Westlake center downtown. However, the were doing some work on the tunnels, so to go the rest of the way downtown, we had to get off at stadium station, and catch the free shuttle which is the number 97, which took us the rest of the way downtown to the intersection of 3rd and I think it was Pine street ( correct me if I'm wrong here). I knew we were close to our hotel, but I wasn't sure how to get there. I asked the bus driver and he gave us easy walking directions and we were on our way. It was only a few blocks away from where we were at, and was easy to find. We stayed at the Warwick Hotel, on a double queen room. I didn't think our rio would, be ready yet, but an knew they had a baggage hold for their guests. I decided we could check in and drop our bags off so we could eat and explore. Well when I checked in with them,my he room they originally assigned to us wasn't ready yet, but she looked at found out that they had another room in the same category available. It was about 11 at this time, so it was great to get a room this early. The room was decent and very clean, the bathroom and a marble look to it that was very pretty. We had a very tiny balcony, just enough room to stand on, and a great view of the space needle. I really wish I could post pictures to give everybody a better idea of the room and what to,expect should you decide to stay there. It's in a handy location, probably 6 or 7 blocks from the space needle and about the same distance from pier 66. There is a movie theater across from the street on one side, and a grocery store ( which would later come in handy later)By this time, we were starving. They have a restaurant in there called Margaux ( sp?), a little spendy, which is typical for Seattle, but very good. We had planned ahead of time to take the ferry over to Bremerton, to look around at the Turner Joy, a Vietnam era destroyer, that they have open to the public to tour through. After we were finished eating, we had the hotel concierge call us a cab, and had him take us to the ferry terminal. If I remember correctly, it cost about $7. During our cab ride, it made me so glad that we decided to fly instead of drive over to Seattle. Traffic is horrible! Once inside the ferry terminal we purchased our tickets, which I believe we're $7 dollars for BF and I and $6 for Dad, since he's a senior. These tickets are round trip, so no need to worry about buying tickets for the trip back to Seattle. The ride over is about an hour long, and is actually quite scenic. There are great views of Mt. Rainier, and you also get to see the other cruise ships in port! I got a great picture of the Jewel with the space needle behind her, and is really, really making me wish I could post photos! Grrr! Anyway, once over to Bremerton, the Turner Joy is only a couple blocks away, and you can see her as the ferry is docking. After exiting the ferry, go to the right, and you will see signs pointing you to the stairs and the elevator to go down to the street. They have a gift shop set up at the entrance, and that is where you pay the entry fee. I believe it was $12 a person, I don't remember if they had a discount for seniors or veterans. It was a really fun thing for us, Dad sailed on a destroyer when he was in the Navy, so this was very exciting for him. They have a few veterans on there talking about the vessel and the history, and so Dad also enjoy having fellow Navy men to reminisce with. We were probably there for about an hour and a half to two hours exploring her, much different from our lavish cruise ships we know and love! We headed back to Seattle at about 5 o'clock I think it was, and made our way out to attempt to catch a cab to the space needle. Now, we live in a fairly small town, and hailing a taxi is a totally new experience for us. We were so clueless as to where to stand or how to do it! We were getting really frustrated, when a cab must have seen the desparation on my face and took pity on us and pulled over lol. I believe the fare to ge to the space needle from the ferry terminal was about $8. We went inside to see about reservations to eat it the revolving restaurant and get tickets to go out on the observation deck. We lucked out and they had room for us right away, and dinner included going up to the observation deck. Dinner is a minimum of $35 per person, and let me tell you, that is not hard to do! That place is EXPENSIVE! The least expensive entree I think was $39, with steaks up to $66. For the three of us, with starters, drinks dinner and dessert, the dinner bill was $300!. It was fun, very attentive waiter, some of the best food I've ever eaten, and a great atmosphere with a constantly changing view, since the restaurant does in fact revolve, it was an experience I'm glad we indulged in. It will leave us with some great memories. The dessert was so fun, it was ice cream served in a dish over dry ice, when they added water, created a dense fog all over! If you make it there, ask them about this dessert! It does take a while to get your food, and they do this to allow you time to enjoy the atmosphere and the food. After dinner we went up to the observation deck and took a few pictures, and looked around. It was crowded up there, so we decided to call it a night and head back to the hotel. The monorail is right next to the space needle and will take you back downtown. I honestly can't remember how much is was exactly ( another reason I wish I would've taken notes), but it was only a few dollars, and a discount for seniors). It drops us off a few blocks from our hotel, and I have to say, thank goodness the concierge at our hotel gave us a city map, or we would have been walking the wrong direction for who knows how long! I tried leading us the wrong way till BF took a look at the map and set us straight lol. Dad was pretty tired and decided to retire for the evening, while BF and I went and had a couple of beers at the hotel bar. I'm going to say it was about 10 o' clock when we decided to head to our room. I go to get ready for bed and go to brush my teeth, and realize I forgot to pack our tooth brushes! I can recall the exact moment I was thinking about them, and then got distracted lol. Then I realize I also forgot BF's comb as well! Thank goodness there was a grocery store across the street where we were able to buy these items in the morning lol. Well that's it for our first day in Seattle. I hope you've enjoyed it so far, I'm going to call it quits for tonight and continue tomorrow evening! Also, if anybody has any suggestions for how to do my review better, please let me know! This is my first serious review, so I'm still learning! Have a good evening!

Did you hear anything about a GI outbreak?

Yes, they cruise director did mention something about an increase in GI, and asked everybody to be diligent in washing their hands. One thing that astounded us, is that after the announcement at the show that evening, BF was in the restroom, and seen two guys walk out without washing their hands! Really? Right after the announcement? Come on people, use some sense and have some consideration.

We were on the Jewel the same week! I have an awesome shot of the Pearl pulling in Juneau (I think, LOL). I'm trying to figure out how to upload the picture here, I've tried twice and it keeps failing.

Oh cool! I remember how neat it was to see our sister ship greeting us in port lol:D

Naturally, I didn't sleep much the night before, I was way too excited! We were up at around 730 and went down to the hotel restaurant for breakfast. I forgot to mention I purchased the cruise package with them, which includes an American breakfast which was bacon or sausage, hash browns, eggs and toast, and a shuttle to the pier. Our waitress this morning was awesome! She had been working here a LONG time, and was hilarious! She was joking and carrying on with us the entire time. BF gave her a $20 tip just for all the laughs early in the morning.

After breakfast we still had some time before it was time to head to the pier, so we decided to go to the grocery store to pick up the items I forgot to pack, and then walk around and explore a few blocks. The weather was beautiful, and we got to see some cool looking buildings. At about 1015 We headed back to the hotel and collected our luggage, checked out and they showed us to our town car that took us to the pier. We get it in and head out, but I noticed that it didn't seem as though we were headed in the right direction. So I asked the driver if he was taking us to pier 66, and he told us that they told him to take us to pier 91! I think the confusion was because our room number was 911, no biggy though, we ended up where we needed to be. Just a heads up to others, that if you use a shuttle service, make sure they know which pier to take you to! Lol.

Once we got to the pier, they were porters everywhere, and people all over helping to point people in the right direction. We took our own bags to the baggage drop, and we were directed to the haven check in. It was so easy and quick. Jean escorted us inside and through security, and straight through to the lounge. They had a very nice area set up for us where we got to sit in nice comfy chairs while we filled out our health survey, set up our onboard account and had our pictures taken. The whole process from arriving at the pier, till we finished our check in and were eating our goodies was probably less than 20 minutes.

Our concierge Elvina introduced herself and let us know we would be boarding shortly, I was so giddy I could barely contain myself! A little before noon, we were told we were starting the boarding process. We all lined up and got our embarkation pictures in front of e green screen, and make our way up the gangway. We we really whisked away up to Cagney's for lunch. I believe Dad and BF both had the New York strip and I had the half roasted chicken and the shrimp cocktail for an appetizer, but I can't remember what I had for dessert, but it was all very yummy! We were informed that for the rest of the week, our breakfast and lunch would be in Moderno. After lunch we went and explored the ship for a while. If I remember right we checked out bliss first and then made our way forward. When we first walked in, BF asked " do they have orgies in here or something?". It cracked me up because I've heard other people on here describe it in similar terms or as looking like an opiated den lol. I thought it was neat looking in though. The bowling alleys looked shorter to us though, does anybody know if they're shorter than the ones on land?

I can't remember the exact order we seen everything else. I love, love love the Spinnaker lounge. I love how it was such a nice open space, and had such lovely views out.. They had quite a few events there, and we hung out there quite often throughout the week. We located the lotus garden, the magnum champagne bar, which was really beautiful. I loved how they had the bubbles in the front of the bar, and just the over all look of it. To me, it was very elegant. BF located the casino so he would know where to donate his money lol.

We made our way to the atrium, and while I liked the look of the atrium with the crystal look of the ceiling, and the colors, I have to say I missed the soaring atrium of the Dawn. It was just so beautiful and classy. I also didn't much care for the big TV in there either. I just didn't have a nice relaxing feel to it, and it was hard to sit back and enjoy they space. I will do into more detail about this later. We mosied around a little while longer, until our room was called ready at around two or so I believe it was. Well, it's betting to be about my bed time to be up for work in the morning. I will go into more detail tomorrow about our room and finish up embarkation day. Hope you all are enjoying so far!

Did you hear anything about a GI outbreak?

Yes, I was on that cruise and was one of many that had Norovirus. If you are going on the Pearl, take all precautions possible and also pack over the counter meds such as pepto and immodium just in case. Good luck.

I booked us in a 2 bedroom haven suite for this cruise. I originally booked us in a non haven suite, but I figured since this was suppose to be a special cruise for my Dad, I might as well go all the way. We had 14508 which is a port side cabin, this is one of the cabins with an awning that goes out below the balcony and you can see straigh down to the water. It didn't really bother us too much though because we still had great views throughout the trip.

This cabin ended up being perfect for us. Dad loved the second bedroom and felt that he had plenty of space, and liked having his own personal area. It was. It had a small closet with drawers, and he was able to fit his suit case under the bed.He also said the bed was very comfortable, as I had our steward put an egg crate topper on it was well. I had thought about putting us in one of the owners suites that face forward for the big panoramic views, but I don't think they had even a sofa bed in those, just one of those beds they role in. I didn't think this would be very comfortable for Dad, so that's why I stayed with the 2 bedroom suite.

We enjoyed having the living room as well, it was a great space for all of us to be able to relax and visit without being cramped. There were a lot of cupboards for storage, and I also did the pre cruise concierge and had our mini fridge emptied before we even got into our cabin. We had the lavazza coffee maker, but we only used it a few times and mostly got our coffee from the court yard. For some reason, it would only make half a cup of coffee mo matter what button we pushed. Does anybody else have experience with this?

Our bedroom and bathroom were fabulous! Our bed was soooo comfy, and was almost like it was in it's own little room were we could pull the curtain closed to help block out light. There was a small TV in there's well as a couple of cupboards for storage. The bathroom has two sinks and also has tons of drawers and cupboards for storage, as well as a decent sized closet. There is a huge window above the bathtub where you can take a nice hot bath while watching the scenery go by, and also had a TV above it as well. Th shower is to die for. I LOVED this shower. It was various settings, you can use just the removable head, just the six smaller jets on the wall, just the just the large head on the ceiling that just has water that falls straight down on your head or have it to where the over heaven and the six small jets all spray you at once. I usually had it on the last setting because I love having water sprayed on me from everywhere lol. It also has a full length window in it, so be careful to full the blind closed whenever your in port :D.

Our balcony was good sized, and we all could be out there comfortably. There were only two chairs and a foot stool out there, so we couldn't all sit at once, but that was no biggy either. The chairs were comfy, and perfect for whale watching or for enjoying a cup of coffee in the morning. I was actually expecting it to be quite a bit smaller, so I was pleasantly surprised by how big it was. Also, like I mentioned before there was an awning just below it to where you couldn't see straight down to the water, it didn't bother us, but I know some people wouldn't really care for it. I will note here, that our cabin was fairly quite, but some mornings you would hear them moving the furniture around on the sundeck in the morning, which we didn't mind because it's not like they can help it. What was REALLY annoying though we're our neighbors on one side. They would be up slamming doors like crazy, at around 4 am. Every. Single. Morning. It sounded like a zoo or something over there, it was horrible! I had stuffed cotton in my ears one night and even that didn't help.

Our room was up just one door either way from the haven courtyard entrances. The pool isn't really big enough to swim in, just enough to get wet in and play around in. What I liked about the jot tub, was that the water was acutally hot in it! On our last cruise on the Dawn, the tubs were only luke warm, this one was great! There were never very many people out there, and was a great place to go somewhere quiet to relax. I'm SO glad I booked the haven for this trip, which I will get into more detail why a little later. The attendant always had goodies of some sort out there, along with coffee, water and orange juice. We also learned later that we could eat breakfast and lunch from Moderno's up there which was very convenient for us. I want to talk about the haven attendant a little bit here, his name was Oliver, and he was AWESOME. He always had the courtyard nice and tidy, and well as keeping the sundeck above is tidy as well. He was always friendly and any time we went over there to eat, he was right there to wait on us. Or any time we just went over to relax, he would make sure that we didn't need anything. We tipped him well at the end of the cruise, and he seemed surprised. Is it not normal to tip the attendant I wonder? I hope that's not the case, because he really does work very hard.mso any Pearl haven dwellers here, please, please, please tip him!

I think that's about it for our room and the courtyard for now. Time for me to get ready for work, so I can earn more money for cruise lol. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask, and I will try to finish up embarkation day later tonight. Thanks to all who are joining me here :D

Question: Usually suite guests dine in Cagneys for breakfast and lunch. Yet they switched you to Moderno. I have never heard of this. ANy idea why? Di you still get the Cagneys menu, even though you were seated in Moderno?

No on the Jewel and I believe the Pearl....the suites dining in Moderno. It must've been a one time thing to go in Cagneys.

I'm honestly not sure why we ate in Moderno's instead of Cagney's. On the Dawn we are in Cagney's as you mentioned, so I was a little surprised by this. I do think it was the same menu for breakfast and lunch as you would normally get in Cagney's. It was all good food, so we weren't concerned about it lol :D

Well it used to be that the Modernero was next door to the Blue Lagoon the latest upgrades added OSheehan's that replaces the Blue Lagoon and Modernero - Modernero was moved into the old Star Bar aka Cagney's extension- so in theory having the suites eat breakfast and lunch in Modernero is the same location as Cagney's

The Dawn will get her retrofit in the spring of 16. The Jewel got hers last year prior to the AK season and the Spirit got it this spring in Portland. I don't remember when the Pearl was changed - it was after 2012 as that was the last time I was on her :D

We relaxed in our room for awhile before our muster drill at O' Sheehan's, which was at 315. Both our butler Rey, and our room steward Edwin stopped by to introduce themselves. These guys were both fantastic! Rely was always checking in on us to make sure we didn't need anything, and Edwin kept our room spic and span. We got down to O'sheehan's a little after 3, and it seemed it was fairly empty which I thought was strange. Well that was because a lot of people didn't show up until the muster drill was suppose to start! As somebody who tries to be punctual, this has always been a pet peeve of mine. So it got started a little late.

We went back to our room, and all our bags were delivered, or so I thought our concierge stopped by to check in on us, and after that we honestly didn't see much of her. Compared to our last concierge on the Dawn, she was relatively absent. On our previous cruise, our concierge was always there to greet us at the theater, or we always seen him around the ship and he would ask how things were going. He was always making us aware of our perks and told us where to meet him for our priority disembarkment in ports, but we had to find this one and ask her what the procedure was. We just weren't that impressed with her. This is just our experience, I'm not sure how everybody else's was.

We started getting our things away, and then my BF says, where is my carry on? (We decided to drop our carry one with our suitcases at the baggage check, since we were so early and didn't want to lug them around with us). I seriously start to panic at this point, I've heard so many horror stories about lost luggage, I was in a tizzy. I honestly was more freaked out than BF, and it was his stuff lol. I called our concierge and told her we were missing a bag, and she informed me that some bags were still being delivered, so that calmed me down a little bit. I was still worried though because I thought all our bags would be kept together.

Before the show that night we decided to eat dinner at Moderno's since we enjoyed it so much on our last cruise. The salad bar was great as usual. One of our passadors Naif, was hilarious! He had us cracking up the entire time, and he and BF were joking with each other all throughout dinner. The meats were great as well. I had one of the sausages, the garlic chicken, the garlic beef and the filet minion. I think I had one more, but I don't remember, I just know the two beefs were my favorite! My mouth is watering just thinking about them! Lol. Another thing I love is the warm pineapple with the brown sugar on it, I could easily eat myself sick on that stuff lol.

We went to the 730 show that night, and we were so excited to see that Tim Kaminski was on this cruise! We seen him in the Dawn, and he was hilarious. My Dad really got a kick out of him, his routine is the same as last time, but still funny. We also enjoyed the rest of the performances that night.

After the show, we went back to our room and relaxed for a while and BF's bag was there big sight of relief for mel lol. After awhile, BF and I decided to go somewhere to get a drink and Dad decided to stay around the cabin, because after traveling and being busy the last couple of days, he was beat. I was wanting a nice quiet place to have a drink and relax. Well, that ended up being easier said than done. I will stop here to comment, that this cruise seemed much more crowded than our first one for some reason. I don't know if it was because there were more kids, or because the weather wasn't the best. It was just my take on it. First we went to Bliss, and they were having some sort of Karaoke there, and it was LOUD. So we left there and headed for Java cafe in the atrium. Nope, the atrium was PACKED with people and crazy busy. Up to Spinnakers, again packed! I was getting frustrated and cranky. I just wanted a nice, quiet relaxing place for a drink! We finally found my paradise at the Sugar Cane bar in Moderno's. It was nice and quiet, and also where we met our favorite bartender, Sohini, also affectionately known as " So Tiny" because of her small stature. I called her " so mightyv" because she definitely kept the guys she worked with in line lol. She was so much fun, and was always happy to see us whenever she seen us come in, even if we didn't sit at the bar. She always had a smile and a wave for us. So I highly recommend finding out what bar she is at on your Pearl sailings and stopping in for a drink and a good laugh.

We headed back to our room at about 11 to retire for the evening. I went out on the balcony to see what I could see, and just enjoy being at sea. I have to say, the first few days I could barely tell we were on a ship. It was very smooth sailing, which actually disappointed me a little. I love to feel the motion of the ship, the pitching and rolling and what not. I would be perfectly happy in the forward most part of the ship, and feel every bit of motion possible. Honestly I seriously hope to some day get into some really serious waves, just to see what it's like. Remember, I love demolition derby and enjoy a good adrenaline rush lol. However, I might change my mind if I actually got to experience those rough seas lol . BF on the other hand doesn't get as much enjoyment out of motion as I do, so I try to take pity on him just a little bit ( the bing pansy lol). Well that concludes embarkation day, and it time for me to take care of a few the nuisances that keep me off of CC. Will try to start on day 2 tomorrow. Have a good night everybody :D
