My husband and I will be in Naples for the day (7 AM - 8 PM) while on a Mediterranean cruise this summer. I have been to Capri before and loved it and would like to go to Pompeii this time. I thought that we would add an extra stop before visiting Pompeii. There are two tours that we are looking at and I was wondering if anyone could provide some input.

We would prefer to book an excursion with the cruise line rather than a DIY one for this port.

1) Taste of Sorrento & Pompeii - 8 hours

Delight in the sights and flavors of Italy's Coast of Sorrento at a rural farmhouse, then explore the ill-fated history of the ancient citizens of Pompeii. Relax in a Sorrento farmhouse, learn about cheese and olive oil production, then taste fresh mozzarella and salami. Roam freely around picturesque Sorrento, peeking in gift shops or enjoying lunch in a trattoria on your own. Tour archeological ruins of Pompeii in a historical exploration that will amaze you.

Highlights:

• Farmhouse Tasting: Savor a selection of fresh mozzarella, tomatoes, and Italian meats while relaxing in Sorrento.

• Sorrento: Spend 1-1/2 hours exploring the breathtaking seaside village, shopping for souvenirs, or dining beachside on Italian cuisine.

• Pompeii: Visit the site of tragic destruction in the ancient town buried by ash and lava from Mount Vesuvius.

2) Amalfi Drive & Pompeii - 9 hours 30 minutes

Delight in breathtaking oceanfront scenery as you drive along the Amalfi Coast and enjoy a tasty Italian lunch before scouring ancient archaeological ruins in Pompeii. Travel along winding roads, admiring dazzling turquoise waters en route to Amalfi. Stroll cobblestone streets and see the outside of the Cathedral of St. Andrew before relaxing with lunch. Explore Pompeii's sprawling excavations, seeing artifacts and ruins from the 79 AD Mount Vesuvius eruption.

Highlights:

• Amalfi Coast: Take in spectacular coastal views while winding along cliffs, azure waters, and picturesque vertical towns.

• Amalfi Village: Wander the charming seaside square, seeing the 11th century Cathedral of St. Andrew and enjoying a delightful lunch.

• Pompeii: Walk among Roman mansions, baths, porticoes, mosaic floors, and lavish temples in the forum of the ruined city.

Hi, have you been on your cruise? If so which tour did you Choose? :)

We are going in a week and a half. We booked option 1 - taste of Sorrento and Pompeii. We booked the one that uses a smaller vehicle and less people on the tour. When I get back I can let you know how it was.

When we toured Pompeii, someone told me to take a hat. I never wear hats, but thought I would take her advice and I was so glad I did. It was so hot and there is no shade. The ship's nurse was on our tour and she was watching out for several elderly people on our tour. I was glad the ship had told all of us to carry a bottle of water and had scheduled the tour in the morning hours. When we finished, we all headed to the cafe for something cold to drink before getting back on the bus. Pompeii was definitely the highlight of our cruise and I would do it again.

Thanks for the tip on wearing a hat. I am bringing one on my trip and will definitely wear it that day.

We just got off the Allure on Sunday - had a great time, but as many people have said, the Mediterranean is very hot this time of year. One thing we wished we would have taken with us was a small battery operated water bottle thing with a fan attached. You see them all the time at theme parks and ball games, etc. We have several but never thought to take one with us. It would have come in really handy in Rome, Naples, and Pompeii. Just thought I would mention it. Have a great time!

Nobody has mentioned Herculaneum as an alternative to Pompeii. It is meant to be a better example of "ruins"

It is too hot! Go early in the day and take a litre of water each! Ie take a private tour!

Do not go into Naples on your own or wander round the port! Do not take cash or valuables over what you actually need. It is highly likely you will be robbed!

My friend was left for dead over his Rolex watch.......no jewellery!

We always do private tours......but would not dream of going into Napoli on our own.

Have a safe and pleasant day!

The cruise line offers a smaller group tour which they call "excursion plus". We liked the fact that is it no more than 25 people.

We will stop in Sorrento first and do Pompeii on the way back. I like what you said about how you liked it in that order as you went back to the ship after Pompeii.

The RCCL shore excursion people have also been helpful in answering some of my questions and giving me a sample itinerary.

We are going to do an independent tour with GPS in Florence and Pisa. We thought this was a good way for us to explore on our own but also meet up with an escort at a specific location when we had to go to next stop or return to ship.

Good info, never heard of this, thanks

We were on the Allure 7/12 - 7/19. The stop in Naples is on Friday -- with a bunch of other cruise ships. There were 8 of us and we did a private tour of Pompei, Sorrento, and Positano with Italy Shore Drivers (whom we also used in Rome.) They were GREAT! Highly recommended. Do yourselves a big favor and do a private tour vs the ship's. We were met at Pompei by a private tour guide (arranged by ISD). There are separate ticket windows for licensed tour guides, and no-wait, separate entrances for them as well. We got the tickets and entered the site in less than 5 minutes. The ship's excursions have you stand in the regular line to get tickets. People were waiting 45 minutes to an hour just to get in! That alone is worth it. My wife did the math -- apples to apples including gratuities for guides and drivers and in every case the private tour was cheaper than the ship's excursion (again, there were 8 of us.) Plus you can do what you want. When we were there there was some sort of truckers strike which made traffic nasty. We decided on the fly to skip Sorrento to have more time for a great lunch and walking around in Positano. Also, we just had our driver stop along the coast road for photo opps. Bottom line, if you can do a private tour, do it! IMHO.

I can't speak for the ship excursions because I was on the NCL Epic when we went to Naples in May but we did a tour of Sorrento, Amalfi Coast, Positano and Pompeii booked through Shoretrips. It was wonderful. Probably the best thing was lunch above Positano. Because we were a small van instead of a large bus, we were taken way up above Positano to a restaurant where we had amazing food with an amazing view. Our driver said the big busses couldn't get up so high because the road was to narrow and winding. We also had some shopping time in Sorrento, Positano and a couple of hours with a private guide in Pompeii. This tour was the highlight of our trip.

We ate at that same restaurant, I think it was called Constantino (or perhaps Costanzo -- all the private drivers know it.) Our driver called the restaurant in the morning to make sure we had a window table for the 8 of us. You are absolutely right: amazing food and amazing view high above Positano overlooking the Med. Wonderful.
