Radisson Ambassador in San Juan- To Stay or Not To Stay

We are flying into San Juan the day before our cruise (August 13) and am looking at staying at the Radisson Ambassador Hotel. I was able to find the hotel for 130.00 on a website. Is this a good price? Is this a good hotel? We want to be in the tourist area so we can walk and do some shopping.

It is an ok hotel. Area is also ok, not near the shops of Old San Juan though. There is a Burger King Next door and the hotel has a nice small casino. I got this hotel for $85 a night off http://www.priceline.com in April. It is clean and the room sizes are decent. Saw a few shady characters outside, but the police seem to patrol the area a lot as it is considered their "Strip Area" I think I would cehck out biddingfortravel.com and attempt to bid for a Resort Class Hotel first before picking this one. I am staying at the Hyatt Beach Resort in Dorado, PR in April for only $75 a night thru Priceline.

WE are staying at the Radisson for one night precruise in April. It is listed as a four star hotel at hotels.com

We stayed there for two nights after a cruise a few years ago. The roof-top pool is very nice. We also walked a couple of blocks over to a beach to swim in the ocean. The water was very rough and had lots of seaweed in it (from a recent storm).

There are lots of upscale shops near the hotel. We enjoyed a great dinner at Ajili-Mojili, a restaurant that serves upscale versions of Puerto Rican food. It's a few blocks away.

The concierge desk at the hotel arranged for local tours. We did the one to the Bacardi factory and Old San Juan.

We stayed there pre-cruise last year. Was pleasantly surprised -very pleased. Got it for $75 on PriceLine - but those deals don't seem to be available this year. Nice casino - nice restaurant - nice room with a great balcony - good location. No complaints and would not hesitate to stay there again. There's a lounge downstairs - they had a latin band that attracts a lot of the locals and watching them dance was a show in itself.

San Juan is an expensive place to stay, and $130 is OK. Go for it!

It was awesome for what we were expecting -- a clean room where we could sleep and relax for the day before the cruise. Nice pool on roof with some pretty views -- really close to the beach (maybe 2 - 3 blocks away).

If you stay here walk down the strip and go to lunch or dinner at Ajilli Mojile

It was GREAT authentic puerto rican food.

staff was very helpful - let us use internet for free to confirm some last minute excursion bookings -- they held our bags in a baggage room during the day after we checked out so we could run around the city before getting on the ship.

Was it a 4 Star resort as you would think of it for the US? No.

Was it a nice, clean hotel with friendly staff? Yes.

It all depends on what your priorities are -- our goals were to not pay more than $100 if we could help it and to be in a clean safe area with plenty of restaurants to try out and hopefully get to the beach. This hotel answered all of those.

We flew into San Juan on Saturday, January 8, took a cab ($13.00)to the Radisson Ambassador. A tip: There were a bunch of American Airlines staff checking in, and they advised us to request a room away from the Burger King across the street.

The hotel had our reservation listed for two double beds, and the clerk very nicely upgraded us to their concierge floor when we explained it was our 25th anniversary and we had requested a king. The concierge floor (8) is very nicely decorated in dark green, and the room and furnishings were great. We had a balcony with a view of the ocean a block away. We walked up Ambassador Avenue, and ate dinner at a Mexican restaurant a few blocks up. The next morning we ate breakfast in the hotel restaurant (very thick, strong, Puerto Rican coffee; ick). The rest of the food was fine. This was an ok hotel, no problems. We paid a lot more than the folks who got it through Priceline, so I felt it was a lot of money for what we got. But the market in January in San Juan is what it is....

Hi everyone, on the hotel's website I found a pre or post cruise package that includes

a 1 night stay in a double room, 1 welcome drink p/p, 1 casino voucher of 10 USD, buffet breakfast, "late checkout" until 1 o' clock and transfer to or from the pier. All for 179USD. To me this sounds pretty good and I'm considering booking it for our precruise 1 night stay in April. You can also cancel without extra costs (except for the last 24 hrs}, that way, when something interesting comes up on priceline I could always take that and cancel the Radisson. What do you think ?
