NYC Terminal Dropoff or Walk in?

Are you able to walk in to Embark in NYC? I know where the Taxi Stand is on 12th and W 48th. Are you allowed to use the same walkway area and go up to the Terminal instead of taking a Taxi and being dropped off? Leaving this weekend on the Gem and realized it's also Fleet Week. May be more of a challenge getting to the Port. Thanks in advance for the assistance.

Yes, you can walk in. If your point of reference is the taxi stand at 12th Ave. and 48th St. just cross 12th Ave. and enter Pier 88 there.

I take NYC Transit Bus, "walk in" all the time.

Just confirm with the porter that you are boarding, leave the bags and head to the 2nd floor.

What about when you disembark and someone pick you up via car?

Which street do we tell the driver to pick up?

On disembarkation @ Manhattan's cruise pier, the best place to arrange for the pickup is on W. 48th Street (whether it's private/family members or car service like Carmel/Dial 7 - we always say 1/4 block to 1/2 block east of 12th. Avenue (that's the "old" West Side Hwy, across from Pier 88) as W. 48th Street is eastbound, going toward First Avenue toward LGA or JFK Airport or cross-town. )

Cars coming from the GW Bridge/down the Henry Hudson Parkway can make a left turn at W. 48th Street & 12th Avenue onto 48th Street - and the street is wide enough for the driver to squeeze & double park, if necessary - just make sure everyone is ready & got all the luggages, ignore the street "hustlers" offering rides. If they are coming from downtown, it's an easy right turn from 12th Avenue onto 48th. Street. From eastside, drive across 42nd. Street (or, coming out of the Lincoln Tunnel) right onto 12th Avenue & then right again at 48th Street. On busy embarkation days with ship(s) in town, police with come around & chase those waiting & double parkers blocking traffic - it's better you wait for the driver to get you then to have them wait.

Happy cruising - there is a sticky's here, sort of 411 & FAQ with excellent pictorial guide to the MCT, nicely written & documented by a fellow CC'er.

We find the least complicated and easiest way (if you both have cell phones)...when you're ready to be picked up, call the picker-upper and tell them you're ready to be picked up...they drive into the terminal, pick you up, throw the luggage in the trunk and drive out. Easier for you then to schlep luggage to the corner of this and that street to be picked up.
