ATMs on Carnival Spirit?

When we were onboard it was $6.60 extra to withdraw money. Not cheap by any means.

Hi -So is the $6.60 fee charged by the cruise ship or is it a bank fee for using an ATM that is not your banks'? And if its the cruise ship fee is there more fees from the bank?

It's the ATM's fee, not the bank's. The bank then charged more on top of that (currency conversion for us because it was U.S. dollars at the time).

Hi,

Don't quite understand this comment. Do u mean the ATM is a US based ATM or that you are using a US based ATM card?

Can anyone confirm whether the 6.60 fee is valid for Australian based ATM cards. For example, I am thinking of using the Citibank Plus debit card.

Thanks for helping out a n00b!!!

If the ATM is stocked with US currency and you use an Australian credit card, you will have to pay currency conversion of the US dollars to AUD to have it charged to your credit card account. In addition you will pay the fee for using the machine.

Be good idea to take cash as well.

There's a few posts on this,

ATMs out of order, card doesn't works for some reason, ATM even out if cash by the second night.

ATM's all $A.

Last week two very young boys were walking past ATM, one said to the other "you know if you put your card (cruise card) in here you get money" subsequently both boys were trying really hard to get money with their cards while I sat in Fountain Cafe watching and laughing to myself - they were so serious, then their Dad saw them and rushed them away. So innocent and funny!!!:)

Other overheard conversation between two boys walking through Casino past the cash cube,

"I would really like to have a go on that" Second boy answers "Oh no you can't do that, they will put you in prison because this is the casino"

No to USD, ATM on Spirit dispenses AUD$, been there , done it.

There is a charge, the ATM would be owned by Carnival and like all non-bank owned ATM;s , they charge.

If you are cruising to NZ do not pay to use the ATM on board.

just use your card ashore.....

nearly all the banks are Australian ,

so its just like home away from home.:D

Kiwi Kruzer, r u sure about this? I withdrew last time around and it was AUD4 + 1% currency conversion fee.

Just an update, came off the Spirit, ATM did indeed dispense AUD and charged AUD6 per withdrawal. Because I was using the Citibank debit card no additional fee was charged.

I have done many many cruises and the ATM on cruise ships is just not to be trusted!! They never work if you need the money for excursion NEVER. Sometimes you can get a bit from the casino and charge it to the sail card. If you insist nicely and at a quiet time at the customer service desk they might be nice enough to give you some cash on a dummy sale (complain about the ATM -- they believe it). Really it is pretty easy to find ATM in town. Check before you leave home for the rates and then REMEMBER which one to use -- can be a big difference. I also carry two debit (check cards for ATM) and two credit cards that are different "systems" so if ATM will only accept certain cards or certain banks and also so that if ATM card does not work you get another chance :D (hard won information). Use the debit card not the credit card -- much more expensive to use credit card as that is a "cash advance".

Finally tell your bank you are traveling so they do not shut down the account for unusual activity. This happened to a travel companion in Spain and a relative in Chile and she was gone a month having to "borrow" all cash from us on our cards and pay us back at home (a real mess but we love her anyway!)

Bottom line: take cash but plan that you will get most of your cash from ATM's in currency of the country.

hi, I have sailed on the spirit before, but it was out of the US, so the ATM was filled with US $$ .. so not sure about the ATMS in sails out of Australia..

however, the ship is a US based ship, that is considered US soil.. so it is a chance that it will have US Dollars.

the ATM that we used was located in the casino, there was another near the courtesy desk ( but it was usually too busy.)

if you want cash to play in the casino, you can simply charge it to your sail card ( if you have already given them your payment option before you sail..

if you are operating your charge account as a cash payment.. then this must be pre-paid in lump sums.. ( always required to be in credit ) so they will notify you as you are running out of cash credit, and ask you to " top it up "

the courtesy desk will almost always carry some foreign currency for those destinations requiring other currencies, but they may limit how much you can buy from them (remember that they are catering for 2000 passengers..

I agree it is still best to carry some spare cash too.. and this cash can be used and exchanged on board.

Hi guys, I just returned from a cruise on The Spirit. According to my bank statements the ATM I used was ANZ ( in the casino). I bank with Bankwest and was not charged anything for withdrawing money. (Statement reads ANZ operator fee $6 paid by B/WEST) so perhaps check with your bank :)
