Best way to get from San Pedro area to Queen Mary

We are flying into LAX a few days prior to our cruise and are looking at several hotels in San Pedro to stay for a few nights. For our last night we will be staying with a group of friends at the QM. I would like to know the safest, cheapest way to get from San Pedro to QM.

If you think there are nicer hotels, tell me which ones please. I am an East Coast Girl. lol I would love your opinions.

I was curious what will be the best and more economical transportation. It is hard to know when you have never been to the area. Thanks everyone and would love others to post.:o

San Pedro is a fine place to stay the night before your cruise if you want, but I would not plan to stay there for several days. There is not much to do in that area, and if I were staying there several days I would rent a car so I could see some of the sights of Southern California and not just hang around the harbor (esp. if you have never been here before). With a car it is pretty easy to get downtown, to the beaches, and to areas such as Hollywood, Santa Monica or the Getty Center as long as you are not on the freeways during major rush hour times.

If you do that, you can just drive over to the QM to see your friends. Are you sailing out of San Pedro or Long Beach? You may want to read some of the reviews here about actually staying on the QM vs. just taking a tour. Many have not been happy with the overnight accomodations.

You could stay in Long Beach for your entire visit (again, I would recommend getting a rental car). There are plenty of good hotels in the Convention Center area (Hilton, Sheraton, Westin, etc.). They are all close to the large shopping center there, and you can walk to the Aquarium and many good places to eat. If you are cruising out of San Pedro, you can then go there the morning of your cruise (it is only 7 miles), either with a rental car (Enterprise only) or a cab.

Another option would be to stay in Santa Monica for your first few days, then either take your rental car to the Long Beach/San Pedro area, or a shuttle.

A lot depends on what time of year you are cruising and what you want to see in LA.

OP!

You keep cracking me up, because the plans keep a-changing!:D

(click on all the thread/links I'm going to give you here for pics and info)

How many days are you staying now?

What is your budget?

What kinds of things/activities are you interested in seeing in LA?

Car rental makes a difference, but may not be mandatory. Renting?

Friends staying at Queen Mary the night before?

Have you been sure to read (and have them read) all of the reviews on tripadvisor? It is extremely hit or miss at the Queen Mary.

They could do better staying at the Coast or Hyatt and taking a tour of the Queen Mary.

Or again, if leaving from Post of Los Angeles in San Pedro, for the night before Crowne Plaza and Doubletree are really the best.

How many days are you staying now? Same as before

What is your budget? no real budget- we have never ever set one for any vacation

What kinds of things/activities are you interested in seeing in LA?

Car rental makes a difference, but may not be mandatory. Renting? We are not renting that is the only thing that has changed because earlier we thought about renting but with prices with our travel increasing we will not be renting a car

Friends staying at Queen Mary the night before? Yes my group of 30+

We are chosing a Hilton Brand Hotel due to staying free with points.

Nothing has changed in our plans besides we probably will not rent a car. Not sure where you think my plans have changed. Every question I have asked has been to see what we would like to do. Nothing has been decided on and will not be 100% until we fly out. lol While I like plans made and decided on we do not go to LA until November. The only plan we have made thus far and have been posted is the fact we are staying in San Pedro and then LB for our final night. This too could change if we decide upon it.

My main question here was very specific on the best mode of transportation from San Pedro to QM. That is what I was wanting to know. I have ideas but was hoping someone would post their opinions and then I could compare them with my ideas.

I do appreciate all of your help though. :)

Okay, Jsme...

I am gathering that your hotels are set and you are sailing on the Carnival Pride--which would mean out of Long Beach--right next to the Queen Mary...

[Yes, there are nicer hotels in Long Beach than the QM, but it's definitely a different experience...I stayed there once--for three nights in July 1978 when I took the Bar Exam in LB...It was sort of a trip--but it is old, and the rooms are, obviously, small...but, yeah, it's a unique situation]...

For getting from San Pedro to the Queen Mary, yes, first I would check if the hotel might be willing to shuttle you there...

Failing that, I would just take a cab...It's only about 7 miles, as has been said...You cross the Vincent Thomas Bridge (right over the other Cruise Terminal), go through all of the harbor-related industrial stuff on Terminal Island, then into Long Beach...a cab ride can't be all that expensive...and there's no real public transportation alternative in this direction...

Have fun...

Actually the hotel we are considering does off a shuttle and I think it will go to the QM but am unsure of a positive yes on that one. I am waiting to make sure we book this hotel to ask the question again. I just feel a bit lame to request the free shutttle to take me to a different hotel. lol
