If you read down the board, there is a ton of threads on these topics. The airport is an hour from the port. Flights direct to the US require extra security, so flights after 11AM are recommended.

As to when you get off, that seems to vary some with cruise lines and their relationships with the port. You might be able to get off starting by 6am, perhaps not until 7am-ish. There are many examples of both outcomes.

We have never had a delay (due to the port authorities) in getting off any ship in Civatvecchia....and we have been to that port at least 40 times (probably a lot more). However, we have been on ships that docked late due to weather related delays...and know of others that were late due to their own mechanical problems. We agree with the other poster, that its wise to book flights (out of FCO) no earlier then 11am...although a little earlier is usually OK. One also needs to consider how to get to the airport, whether it be cruise line transfers or private transfers (our personal preference).

The authorities in Civitavecchia are very cooperative...and there should be no immigration or customs check. The biggest delays are often due to the time it takes to get all the luggage off the ship...and you can avoid this problem by using express debarkation (which means you must carry all your own luggage off the ship from your cabin). All flights to the USA will require check-in at the remote Terminal 5...which can add some time to the check-in process. I believe that Air Canada is back at Terminal 3 (more convenient). If you do depart from Terminal 5...a private transfer is a great option since you can ask them to drop you right at that terminal. If you take a cruise line transfer (often more expensive then private transfers) they will possibly drop everyone at Terminal 3...where you would then need to board a free shuttle bus (with your luggage) over to Terminal 5.

Just a clarification here - all flights direct to the States on US-branded/based airlines (American, Delta, and United) depart from T5. Direct to the States flights on Alitalia depart from T3. And Hank is correct that Air Canada flights are back to T3. The only airlines currently using T5 are American, Delta, United, and ElAl.

How about Air Transat flying direct to Toronto YYZ, is it T-3 ?

Yes, it does depart from T3. You can verify that for yourself on the airport's web site here: http://www.adr.it/pax-fco-voli-in-tempo-reale?p_p_id=3_WAR_realtimeflightsportlet&p_p_lifecycle=0&p_p_state=normal&p_p_mode=view&p_p_col_id=column-2&p_p_col_pos=1&p_p_col_count=2&_3_WAR_realtimeflightsportlet_tab=departure&_3_WAR_realtimeflightsportlet_codScaOpe=FCO&_3_WAR_realtimeflightsportlet_rouIata=&_3_WAR_realtimeflightsportlet_airport=&_3_WAR_realtimeflightsportlet_codVet=&_3_WAR_realtimeflightsportlet_carrier=&_3_WAR_realtimeflightsportlet_date=2016-08-29&_3_WAR_realtimeflightsportlet_orario=14%3A00-15%3A00&_3_WAR_realtimeflightsportlet_numVol=&_3_WAR_realtimeflightsportlet_dataNumVol=2016-08-29&_3_WAR_realtimeflightsportlet_searchType=standard&flightId=4412399&trackingUrl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.adr.it%2Ftracking-dettaglio%3Fp_p_id%3Dflig*******ing_WAR_flig*******ingportlet%26p_p_lifecycle%3D0%26p_p_state%3Dnormal%26p_p_mode%3Dview%26p_p_col_id%3Dcolumn-2%26p_p_col_pos%3D1%26p_p_col_count%3D2%26_flig*******ing_WAR_flig*******ingportlet_dt%3DWB%26_flig*******ing_WAR_flig*******ingportlet_fid%3D4412399%26_flig*******ing_WAR_flig*******ingportlet_cmd%3Dwreg%26_flig*******ing_WAR_flig*******ingportlet_fn%3DVY%2B6696%26_flig*******ing_WAR_flig*******ingportlet_fdt%3D10%253A00%26_flig*******ing_WAR_flig*******ingportlet_fdd%3D1472421600000&flightId=4410781&trackingUrl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.adr.it%2Ftracking-dettaglio%3Fp_p_id%3Dflig*******ing_WAR_flig*******ingportlet%26p_p_lifecycle%3D0%26p_p_state%3Dnormal%26p_p_mode%3Dview%26p_p_col_id%3Dcolumn-2%26p_p_col_pos%3D1%26p_p_col_count%3D2%26_flig*******ing_WAR_flig*******ingportlet_dt%3DWB%26_flig*******ing_WAR_flig*******ingportlet_fid%3D4410781%26_flig*******ing_WAR_flig*******ingportlet_cmd%3Dwreg%26_flig*******ing_WAR_flig*******ingportlet_fn%3DAZ%2B490%26_flig*******ing_WAR_flig*******ingportlet_fdt%3D10%253A05%26_flig*******ing_WAR_flig*******ingportlet_fdd%3D1472421600000&_3_WAR_realtimeflightsportlet_rtFlightsSearchContainerPrimaryKeys=4410869%2C4410870%2C4410898%2C4410892%2C4410895%2C4412236%2C4410833%2C4412399%2C4410781%2C4410849
