stpointer Posted March 19, 2014 #1 Share Posted March 19, 2014 This will be my second visit to Amsterdam. I have a full day before boarding our ship. Our first trip we spent exploring Amsterdam and taking a day trip to Delft. For this trip I was thinking perhaps Gouda or Leiden. Can anyone provide their experiences or suggestions? Ine Posted March 19, 2014 #2 Share Posted March 19, 2014 In fact you can do both on the same day. Gouda is a short trainride from Leiden. Leiden is known for its university, has some canals and a nice center. Gouda is known not only for its cheese, but also for its candles. The townhall can be found on many photos. Both are worth a visit, but maybe Leiden has a bit more to offer. May I also introduce interesting cities like Haarlem, Alkmaar, or even Enkhuizen (with is Zuiderzeemuseum). http://www.zuiderzeemuseum.nl/en/10/home/ Depending the season you can make a nice daytrip from Hoorn by steamtrain to Medemblik, by boat back to Enkhuizen and regular train back to Hoorn (or Amsterdam). http://www.museumstoomtram.nl/en
stpointer Posted March 19, 2014 Author #3 Share Posted March 19, 2014 Thank you for your suggestions Ine. It was because of your recommendation that I visited Delft last time. I thought that was a truly beautiful city!!!! Are these other cities you suggested similar to Delft?

Ine Posted March 19, 2014 #5 Share Posted March 19, 2014 Thank you for your suggestions Ine. It was because of your recommendation that I visited Delft last time. I thought that was a truly beautiful city!!!! Are these other cities you suggested similar to Delft? I think Haarlem comes closest to Delft. From the trainstation (just a trainride of 15 minutes more or less) you simply walk into the centre. Grote markt has the townhall, a nice old big church and some outdoor terraces for a drink or meal. Als the very interesting Frans Halsmuseum. Not that famous as Anne Frank was Corrie ten Boom, who helped a lot of people during WWII. You can visit that house also. Check this link: https://www.haarlemmarketing.nl/bezoeken/ and: http://www.corrietenboom.com/ Also a canaltour is possible when the weather is nice.http://www.haarlemcanaltours.com/en/content/rondvaarten
