Cab or car service are the best options. Price is pretty much comparable. Yes, there are public transportation options that will save you a few bucks, but with luggage....WAY to much bother and effort. For what you're spending on the cruise and your time in NYC, a cab or car service is SO minimal in added expense and SO worth it!

I disagree about taking a taxicab. NY City taxis are not required to take you to Cape Liberty and if a driver agrees to do it, they may attempt to get you to agree to an outrageously high fare.

It's much better to take a car service, as Carol previously recommended.

Above poster: Not exactly sure what the car service would charge, but the last time we took a cab he charged us $50. from mid-Manhattan (Penn Station) to Port Liberty. What (approx) is the cost for car service? I assumed about the same.

Car service should also cost about $50 (plus tolls and tip), so you were charged a competitive fare.

Since NYC taxis aren't required to go to Cape Liberty, and because the fare is unregulated (car service fares are also unregulated, but the competitive marketplace means the larger car services usually have comparable fares) could have meant either outright refusal by taxis to make the trip or a much higher fare if the driver thought he could get away with it. It would be up to you to be savvy enough to know the market and negotiate a reasonable fare...and many if not most tourists don't have the knowledge to ensure they're not going to be ripped off by an unscrupulous driver.

When you book a car service in advance you can comparison shop to check prices and you'll get a firm quote from the service when you book. That minimizes the chances of being overcharged.
