What are the other things to do while in port...

We will be on the Carnival Dream in July with a port day (10am - 6pm, per schedule) at Puerta Maya. From what i can find, this is the port for the Carnival ships usually. Since we have excursions planned for the other ports along with what i consider to be a relatively short time to be in Cozumel, we are considering just getting off the ship and exploring the area that's within walking distance. So I'm asking for advice and recommendations for what, if anything, should we do if we're staying close to port. Any good restaurants nearby? A must do bar? Something to entertain the kids (9-11)? Somewhere we shouldn't go? Any advice would really help.

Shopping at the pier or a short taxi ride to downtown. Or cab to one of the popular beach clubs for the day - Money Bar offers good snorkeling from the shore and is only a $11-12 cab ride each way. No admission fee plus good facilities and good food, drinks and service

There's not much close by the Puerta Maya terminal... You can catch a cab to downtown San Miguel for $8, and there are blocks and blocks of restaurants, bars, and shops.
