The pelicans are the same type - brown pelicans - but the Pacific browns during breeding season will develop a rich red color to their throat patch...while the Atlantic variety during breeding season will develop a dark reddish brown color to their neck and nape, but not the pouch. When in non-breeding colors, the two will essentially look the same.

 

Neat shots - always love the pelicans...and I miss the seals too!

I did not know. This explains why we did not see the red throat patch until recently!
