Will be in Grand Turk in Sept and will have our own equipment. We are inexperienced snorkelers so we don't plan on going way out and really don't want to do an excursion. Just looking for something to do on our own . Any suggestions ?

You can walk down the beach a short distance, walk/swim out a short distance and snorkel. Or you can take a cab farther away to a better location to snorkel off the beach.

We went out with one of the local dive companies; they also take snorkel groups, up to about 10 people at a time. Took us to the Wall and several incredible reefs plus a small cove with stingrays.

We were in Grand Turk in June. Never snorkeled before that cruise. We first tried at Half Moon Cay, but there wasn't much to see other than a lot of white sand bottom and a few fish. We decided last minute to try again in Grand Turk and so glad we did. While everyone else went to the main beach (out in front of Margaritaville, that area) we went on the opposite side of the dock (right side if you're on the dock facing the island). It's a smaller area that doesn't have as many beach chairs and there were less than 10 people in that area. We saw fish, small coral, a live conch, a crab, & more. Great for us beginners and didn't have to fight the crowd.

Do you remember the name of the local dive company? Did you book ahead of time or when you got to the island? Sounds great!

This is where we snorkeled too and it was great for beach snorkeling, free and right off the pier.

We just came back from there and my husband, son, friend and his son all snorkeled right off the beach, in front of our cruise ship! They saw amazing fish, tons of them, a huge variety, and a canon sunk in the water, oh and an anchor. They went out like 2-3 times and loved it! Didn't cost them a penny and they saw a ton of things. My husband and our friend have both snorkeled and dived. By both boys hadn't done much snorkeling, never diving. My son had tried it last year but got freaked out, this time he loved it. They went past the ropes there, closer to the ship.

Thank you kctwinmommy, where did they get the snorkeling equipment from?

We have our own. You can get it pretty cheap from many of places here before you sail. I did see some table and vendors renting it on the beach, but honestly, it looked pretty used. ;)
