My library has this book and will pick it up today,

Good book. Our TA gave us one the first time we booked with him for the Caribbean.

We used another one called "Caribbean Ports of Call - a guide for today's cruise passengers" - very extensive for the Eastern and Southern regions by Showker and Brennen. Perfect for the Maasdam itinerary.

Anne Vipond is a great author. Her books are loaded with details and information. I have her book for Hawaii and the one for Alaska.

Here is another one we found very helpful: A Brief History of the Caribbean by Jan Rogozinsky. (ISBN 0-452-28193-8 Plume)

It takes you well beyond the sun, the sand and the port shopping stops as you travel through the lives of indigenous peoples, early colonial history, and to its troubled multi-cultural history today.

Gives a good context for what you see today and helps you seek out some of its secret stories and places creating the sense you are traveling the same open seas and viewing the same coastlines as Columbus did on his several voyages here centuries ago.

Thanks for the mention of this book ... I read her Panama Canal by Cruise Ship book before we did the transit and I found it helpful and informative. Happened to be at the library today when I read your comment and I picked up a copy to read for our Fall Carib sailing.

There has not been an update of the a guide to Cruising the Caribbean by Anne Vipond. We are cruising there in December. Will it still be beneficial?
