Has anyone cruised the Baltic in late August/early September? Is it cold and rainy typically?

Thanks for the help! :)

Like Ashland, we also cruised mid to late August, 2009,and we had spectacular weather. I have said it many times already, but during our crusie, you could definitely feel the autumn chill coming in. We had sunny weather each and every day but every morning we needed a light jacket as it was chilly. Most days we removed it by noon, but going out on the ship in the evening, you must have some sort of jacket. As far as 'rainy', well that is up the the big guy up in the sky. Typically, late August and early September, you should be fine.

Here are a few of my pix of our time there, with glorious blue skies the entire time. (which always help make pix that much better)

In Copenhagen, City Hall Square is sort of the 'hub' of downtown Copenhagen

In Tallinn, on the top of the hill, you can peer our out, over the rooftops, out towards the bay where your cruise ship is anchored.

Also in Tallinn, the main square, a great place to have some lunch and sit and relax

In St Petersburg, at Peterhof, with all the fountains in full bloom

Also in St Petersburg, one of the many Churches you will see

http://i834.photobucket.com/albums/zz267/Giantfan13/baltics/europe855.jpg

In Helsinki, just another marvelous day. here is the Uspensky Orthodox Cathedral, not far from Market Square

Don't fret the weather. That time of year, bring a windbreaker, a few pair of jeans, some good walking shoes, and pack one of those small portable umbrellas and you will do fine.

Cheers

Len

Typically its nice sunny days intermixed with rainy days - possibly thunderstorms.

The baltic sea has stored heat during the summer so it will help keeping the temperatures from dropping down too fast. Mornings might be a bit chilly but temps usually gets better as sun gets up.

We cruised on 8/30/10. The weather was OK. Temperatures were mild, with scattered rain showers throughout. Mostly in St. Pete.

Added advantage was that it was the end of the seasons. Good deals to be had on the ship, they were trying to get rid of their Baltic themed items.

we sailed on August 27 from Dover.

Light rain as we sailed and a bit cool.

Copenhagen was a cool crisp morning that cleared to a beautiful mainly sunny day. Brief shower while we were on our canal cruise.

Warnemunde - pouring rain that persisted all morning and into the afternoon (we drove to Lubeck) but then cleared late to a gorgeous sunny afternoon that allowed us to sit by the fishing harbour and drink!!

Talinn - mainly sunny day with a lunchtime shower

St Petersburg - lousy both days, cool, pouring rain, very windy

Helsinki - beautiful day, mainly sunny

Stockholm - another beautiful day

return seas - first day sunny but very windy, second day roughest seas we've experienced in 69 days at sea

weather is weather, no guarantees

Things are generally cooler in late August/early September for much of these areas. Not too bad. Not the best. You can go to this website and check, port-by-port for each date you will be there for the exact weather there last year, plus in the past on each city's historic averages. See:

http://www.wunderground.com

To provide some added details, here are a few weather averages for three of the key cities in the Baltics that details how things move in late August. We had super great weather in late July and early August, 2008. The "Weather Gods" were kind to us. See the blue skies in these two pictures below.

Copenhagen: High/low averages,

May: 59/45 °F

June: 67/52 °F

July: 69/55 °F

August: 69/54 °F

September: 62/50 °F

St. Petersburg:

May: 59/42 °F

June: 67/52 °F

July: 71/56 °F

August: 66/54 °F

Stockholm:

May: 60/43 °F

June: 69/52 °F

July: 71/56 °F

August: 69/55 °F

September: 59/48 °F

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

As most people have stated - be prepared for a variety. We packed for "standard" Baltic weather (60's/70's maybe low 80's with days of rain) -- and mid-July 2010 was the hottest on record in most all of the ports we visited (especially SPB). It was well over 100 on all three days we were there. DH had to purchase a pair of shorts in Stockholm pre-cruise as he hadn't planned on such extreme warm weather!! While we were blessed with sun 90% of the time, it was HOT. But, it could just as easily be the other way around.

On our ship, people had to do more laundry as their "warm weather clothes" were put into overtime (in SPB no A/C = sweaty tourists!). But pack layers so you can layer up or down depending on what Mother Nature hands you!

Weather.com lets you see weather 10 days out...which might also be somewhat helpful.
