Back from the Legend!

A BIG Thanks to everyone for your wonderful and helpful insights on cruising 101. My family & I arrived yesterday morning at the NYC Pier, from our August 24th cruise. Hopefully, any new cruisers looking for information will get some use out of this review.

Embarkation - Arrived a little later than planned, around 12:30. Husband dropped us off (myself and 2 children ages 14 and 5) with all of the luggage, as he parked the car at the Pier's garage, which cost $180 for the 8 days. The porter loaded our 2 huge & heavy luggage (tipped $5) and off we went through the security line and then check-in, which was divided into deck levels. It was a long line, but it was quick. After you show them all of your documents, credit card, picture ID's, they give you your sail & sign cards. Then off you go to another line where you insert the s&s card and they take your picture to attach to the encoding of the card. All together, the process was about 1 hour and we were on board by 1:30 pm.

Cabin - We went straight to our balcony room #7238 on the Verandah deck which was ready for us. It was a lot smaller than I thought from all the pictures I saw on webshots, but it was definitely acceptable. We stepped out onto the balcony which was small but a definite must have. Being the anal person that I am, I checked the sheets and found nasty stains on them. Surprisingly enough, there was a knock on our door and it was our Steward, Prasit. He introduced himself and stated that he needed us (as well as other cabin passengers) to sign a form stating we didn't require any syringe and hypodermic needle disposal (?). So my husband signed it and we told him that we wanted the sheets changed. After he saw the sheets he was apologetic and said he will change it later that night because he cleans from 6am-12pm and 4-9 pm. That was fine with us. I also had my husband wipe down the sink & toilet with Lysol wipes because you can never be too clean. The bathroom was TINY! Everything in there is within arm's reach, literally. The toilet smelled from day 1, but we were prepared with our scented oil can from Target. The shower curtain is flimsy, but it didn't pose a problem for any of us.

Muster Drill - Take heed of other posts....arrive late to the drill! We had muster station B which was on deck 3. They line everyone up against the wall maybe 4-5 people deep. If you were in the first two lines against the wall like we were, it gets very warm and you may feel claustrophobic. Definitely ARRIVE about 5-10 minutes late. If you have young kids, also be warned those horns can get really deafening. If you notice a horn in close proximity, warn your children so they are not alarmed.

Dining - We went back to our cabin and found our luggage sitting right outside our door, just in time for dinner. Our s&s cards stated table 323, upper. We went to Truffles on deck 3 and found out we had a booth table close to the window! How perfect for us. We absolutely loved our table assignment and we saw the view of NYC and the Statue of Liberty as we set sail. It was perfect. We met our head waiter, Manny and his assistant Edwin, who were so accommodating to our picky 5 year old. They were really good to us. Our bar service lady, Tatsiana, was also extremely friendly and ALWAYS smiling. She added to our great dining experience as well. Take note, however, lemonade is free from the lido deck only. That first night, I asked her for a glass for my son and it cost $2.00 plus tip.

During each dinner, the four of us each had 1 or 2 drinks, alcoholic beverages for the adults of course, foo-foo virgin drinks for our 14 year old daughter and lemonade for our 5 year old son. It wasn't as expensive as I thought it would be. We brought bottled water and cans of soda for consumption while in the room. We opted not to get the fountain cards which worked out well for us. The water on the ship is EXCELLENT. I am very critical of tap water, but it was really good quality. I also always used lemon wedges which were at our table each night after my 1st request.

Some drink prices before 15% gratuity:

Alcoholic

Long Island Iced Tea $4.50

Mango Daiquiri w/souvenir acrylic cup $6.75

Mango Daiquiri refills $4.95

Guinness Pub Draft Can (? oz, but it was a tall can) $5.25

Kiss on the Lips $4.95

Corona 12 oz $4.50

Shot of Sambuca (perfect mixed with espresso after dinner) $4.75

Non-alcoholic

Frozen Daiquiri / Miami Vice $3.95

Lemonade $2.00 NO refills

Cappuccino and Espresso are free and you ask the assistant waiter for it.

You can order as many appetizers and entrees as you like and they don't get upset with you. My husband actually ordered 3 lobster tails at the formal dinner and they didn't even blink. We also actually enjoyed the dancing and singing of the waiters towards the end of each dinner. It sets such a great mood and really charges everyone. One night they formed a Conga line which anyone can join in. The Maitre' D, Chander was funny and very nice. He walked around the 2nd and 4th nights and actually talked with us and made sure everything was fine. We never saw him again, but we heard him every night as he told his jokes and updated us on the color team score tallies. He was not at the door with his hand out the last night expecting that envelope as others have previously posted as typical of a maitre' d.

Lido Buffet - We only went up there about 2-3 times. The food was ok, nothing great. There was a Chinese food Station, Italian (pizza and calzones), and a Deli Station.

Grand Gala Buffet - We were asleep for that so we totally missed out!

By day 5, we were so sick of seeing food, but we still managed to gain so much weight. :D

Tipping - Yes, there was an envelope for the maitre' d in your debarkation package and yes it was addressed at the debarkation talk, but it really was up to your discretion. It was also up to your discretion to tip the Camp Carnival staff. My son went to Camp Carnival once for about 2 hours and he didn't want to ever return. He said they played duck, duck, goose and when he goosed some other child, that child hit and kicked him because he didn't want to be goosed. Needless to say, my husband and I didn't force him to go ever again. Yes we addressed it and they said "sorry". It was in my comment card to say the least. The young women who worked there were really friendly, but they really can't control everything. We tipped room service about $3-4 depending on how much we ordered. We love that morning coffee on the balcony at 6:30 am as the sun rose. It was truly priceless.

PORTS OF CALL:

San Juan, P.R. (2:00-Midnight)

Arrived approximately 2 pm. They announced that only people who were booked on excursions through Carnival were being let off the ship. Unfair! We were already on line with all the other passengers and the majority of them had there own agendas as well. We walked off on our own "walking tour" and shopped. Some areas were a little sketchy, so we were just really careful. We were back on board before dark.

St. Thomas (7:00-6:00 pm)

We booked a shopping and snorkel package with Godfrey's Tours ($20/adult and $10/child) Not a bad price for having a driver for the day. Godfrey picked us up right at the security area. Beware: there are taxi drivers and other tours lined up right at the gate as well. You just tell them you're booked with someone else already and they move on. Godfrey dropped us off for 3 hours of shopping (9-12) which actually was not even long enough, believe it or not. He told us someone else will pick us up at an appointed location. Tony picked us up right at Noon to go to Coki point for snorkeling. He told us around 2 pm, it gets really crowded and boy did it. We left our packages with Tony who would later pick us up at 4 pm. There are drink servers walking all over the beach and there is a food stand where they have chicken nuggets and fries among other things. My husband tried to order a Corona, but they were out. (?) A can of Budweiser was $3 + $1 tip= $4. We were done around 3:30 and paid $1/person to use the bathroom facilities at Coral world which was a short walking distance. NOT worth it. It was filthy, but I have nothing to compare it to. We did not use the facilities on the beach because I assumed it would be bad. 3:45 and we were ready to go. We sat at the appointed pick up area and soon enough, we saw Tony who then dropped us off back at the ship shortly after 4:30. Enough time to shower and get ready for dinner.

Tortola (7:00-2:00 pm)

Walked off on our own and it was way too hot. People approach you and offer you a cheap tour, but that's sketchy. We opted to walk for a while. In town, we shopped a little, but their prices were set. That means no haggling. The little flea market right outside the pier location was much more appealing. They were flexible. We were so hot, tired, and sweaty and agreed to take a cab ride back to the pier. We got into Albert's taxi and asked him how much to get back to the ship. He said $3/person (very reasonable). So I asked how much would it be for a scenic tour of his beautiful island. He was the nicest old man you could ever meet. He said $30 for 30 minutes. He took us to such hidden areas and we saw the real Tortola, not the tourist areas. Needless to say, it wasn't 30 minutes. We fell in love with this beauty! He told us a lot about the history of this island. We ended up giving him $60 and bought him a drink, too. He really, truly is a nice man.

Spa - My daughter and I decided to go for a spa treatment to cure our aching feet. Being from Jersey, there are 10-20 manicure/pedicure places in each town, pretty much at every block you pass. I pay $25 for a manicure/pedicure and it includes a good massaging of the calves and feet. So we booked a 55 minute spa pedicure which was pretty much a just a pedicure, but it cost $55. I thought it included a foot massage, but no, it did not really. I was extremely disappointed. It was a good pedicure, but definitely not worth $55.

Pools - Always crowded, never a place to sit or lay down on the Lido deck. You can go 1 level up and you'll find empty lounge chairs for sure.

Entertainment - We saw only 2 shows. They were ok. The show with the guests is definitely worth staying up for. The Sonny & Cher act was really funny. The guests actually sound far better than the paid singers, who rated only fair with me.

Casino - LOST A LOT of money in the casino. The odds are definitely against you. My husband and I met Claudia the host and she was so nice. She seemed like she was pretty down to earth. The dealers pretty much rotate around all the games. We played roulette and Let it Ride. We had good runs at both, but did not quit while we were ahead, so we ended up losing a lot. Claudia ended up giving us a tote bag with 2 t-shirts, deck of cards, and a ship on a stick. I guess we somehow "bought" it with our losses. :rolleyes:Can you say 1-800-GAMBLER

Bingo - When did this game become so expensive? 1 card $10 / 3 cards $20. Sometimes they have specials where you play those same cards for 3, 5, 7, or 10 games. Other times, they are only good for 1 game. My husband actually won twice in a row ($180 and $100) on our last sea day, but then we turned around and lost it at the casino.:( Oops. There is one game where the prize was a cruise for 2 on any Carnival itinerary. We really wanted that one, but no such luck.

Debarkation - We had our suitcases outside our door by midnight. They started calling the self assists by 9:00 am (?) and they were done by 10:15. We were near the Pursers area and they just said, if you're ready to go, you can go. I stated that our color was Orange, and didn't we need to wait til they called that color. They said no and we were out the door. We were directed to our color luggage area and found our luggage really fast, grabbed a porter and breezed through customs, without skipping a beat. We were in the car by 10:30 and home by 11:30 am.

Hope I didn't bore all of you. I hope this info actually helps some of you cruising on the Legend soon. Just remember, check your capers every night for the events on the following day. Highlighters are key! It'll highlight your day and you know where you want to be and at what time. Post it notes did not work for us. Prasit did not realize he needed to look on the mirror for any messages. We basically paged him (his pager is a button on the phone) if we ever needed him. I pressed it only once when I had a concern about our beach towels. He came knocking not even 2 minutes later. For first time cruisers, it was an experience. We'll definitely cruise Carnival again.

How was the smoking?

The few times we smelled smoke was when we were passing through the bar areas or casino. It was really bad at the Table games. We were out on the balcony a few times and the smell of cigarette smoke would blow by briefly. We tried to see where it was coming from but there was no way to tell. They have designated areas where smoking is allowed, so I think everyone was pretty compliant.

:) Hi first timers! I was on the same cruise! I think I met you guys on the thread "Roll Call" for Legend, Aug. 24! Anyhow, embarkation was a breeze for us. This trip was just I and my 2 teens ages 15 & 20. As you said, after tipping the luggage guy ($6.00- I gave him a dollar a bag), we did the 1st line that you just stand on and wait, then the line where they give you your S & S cards and the last line where they take your picture. All in all, it did take only about an hour tops! As soon as you come off the gangway, the ship opened up into an absolute huge "Palace". Even though my children have cruised before, at their ages now they appreciated it more. Their eyes opened wide and the grins on their faces was all I needed to see to be satisfied.

The first thing we noticed was the double, "hollywood" style elevators going up! Awesome. The bar in the center of the lobby with live classical musicians playing.

Before we left for the cruise, someone on one of these threads on the Cruise Critic website warned us of the "urns" all over the ship.

You have to admit, the urns were all over the place. My son jokingly said "Ma, you think some of those moviestar legend's ashes are in those urns!" Corny I know. Realistically, I believe there were way more urns than dead legends (Sorry for the black humor).

Anyway, we went straight to our room (Riviera deck-Ocean view). We were satisfied. After inspecting the cabin, we left our carryons and went to the Lido deck. We knew that's where the already prepared food was!

Speaking of the "muster drill", we were also in area "B". The ship left very late as you know (approx. 6:30ish) and as we were going through our drill, it started to pour rain.

When we returned to our room, our luggage was also at our door. Also, if I had known the faucet water on the ship was that good, I would have never lugged 12 bottles of water in a carry-on! I was surprised at how delicious the water was, especially my son (Water and milk are the only beverages he drinks).

I also opted out of the soda cards. My son doesnt drink soda and my daughter didn't care as long as there was juice, so we were set. Occasionally she would have a Sprite. Nothing was expensive. I had maybe 1-3 drinks a day (usually the "drink of the day" which was $3.50 if you got it in a regular glass) or you could get the fancier "plastic" tall glasses for 6.25. I collected enough of those.

I thought the shows in the "Follies Lounge" were very good. Especially the talent show with the guests. And yes Sonny & Cher were good, as well as James Brown and I thought the Frank Sinatra kid was cute.

I was also on the second level in Truffles, but I was at the late seating (8:15). My headwaiter was names "Slavik" he was exceptional. I love lobster so when I asked him for 2 lobster tails, it was no problem at all. I was in heaven.

I didn't hear anything about only passengers going on the excursions could get off the ship in Puerto Rico. I got off with everyone else. I caught my own little tour guide on the sidewalk. He charged $20 bucks a head, the tour was o.k., but if I had known the shopping area was walking distance from the ship, I would have just done that and I would have been satisfied.

I enjoyed St. Thomas the best. I caught a taxi for $9.00 a head and went straight to Coki Beach. We were delighted. The lounge chairs were only $5.00, there were people walking all over to assist getting you drinks or food. The water was warm, crystal clear and right at our feet! It was pretty crowded, but we enjoyed it just the same. We left earlier than planned, about 4:00 pm to go back to the ship. The cab ride back was $8.00 a head and it was like an amusement park ride, fast and curvy!

I didn't venture too far from the ship in Tortola. My 15 yr. old daughter decided to stay on the ship with her new friends, so it was just my son and I. We got as far as the little market right off the pier. There was enough variety in the merchandise there to suit us and we shopped there and hurried back to the ship. The sun started to get to us and we ran back to the pleasantly air conditioned ship.

I ate more ice-cream than anything else on the ship. As far as the Gala Buffet, you didn't miss that much. It was pretty to look at, especially the ice sculptures, but out of all of the hundreds of fancy food display and garnishes, I took 1 banana, 1 peach, some shrimp salad and 1 slice of some kind of meat (I'm still trying to figure out what it was) , and I took some great pictures, then I went to bed.:p .

Debarkation was also smooth. We had all our documents in hand and we did the "self assist" thing and got off the ship about 9:30.

I am already planning my next cruise. This time with the whole family and friends.

Yes we were supposed to meet at Medusa's. Did anyone show up? We may have shown up at the wrong night.:( I'm sorry we missed you guys. My daughter tried to do the Camp Carnival thing, but she was on the older range of that 12-14 group. She met a few other 14 year old girls that she hung around with though. I hope you and your children had a blast, too!

Hi,

I was on the cruise also, we weren't able to meet at Medusa's that night - the teens had the disco at that time. When I got on the ship I ended up sitting next to Frank and his friends so I met them, I was on a tour in Tortola with Cindy and her family, and I met Dan another night, sorry I never got to met you guys. I had a great trip, I never saw my kids they were always with other kids and they had a ball.

Thanks for your reviews! Question: How much were the soda cards?

My DD, Heather and I are heading for the Carnival Legend May 11, 2007. It will be her 1st time on the Legend.

This will be my 4th cruise on the Carnival Legend. I've done her Southern Caribbean, Western Caribbean, Cruise-To-Nowhere, and now will be on her Eastern route.

Looking forward to this cruise very much. My DD is anxious to gamble and drink. She turns 21 in November................Karen:)

Sorry, we didn't buy the soda cards, but I believe for an adult (over 18) it's somewhere in the mid to high $40's. But I'm not 100% sure. Gambling on the ship is 18 and over. I believe Claudia (casino host) will be gone by mid-September. There will be a new casino host. Email him/her and then introduce yourself when you go. It just so happened she sat down next to my husband and me when we were at the Let it Ride Table (what a coincidence, right?) and then I introduced myself. Whether she went back and read through her emails, I'm not sure but she was really nice to us. After she made her rounds, she came back, sat and talked to us for a while. They don't rate you the same way as in the Atlantic City or Vegas games. You need a minimum bet of $25 to start beign rated. The first night, roulette was $0.50 minimum and Let it Ride was $3.00 minimum. How funny, right? After that first night, Roulette went to $1 and Let it Ride was $5 and they only use 1 deck of cards, not the standard two. You and your daughter will have a blast!

Sorry we didn't get a chance to meet. How funny though because I met another Mindy travelling with her 2 sons, daughter, etc. At first I thought it was you, but realized it was not. Maybe we'll meet on another cruise!

It was great though, wasn't it? How about that Captain Volpi...he was a character!!! He goes off on tangents, but he was funny!

Were you at the excursions talk? Remember when Brent (the Cruise Director) mentioned a child that was clapping regarding alcohol and he gave him the snorkel? That was my 5 year old son being silly. We can't wait to go on another cruise. We're thinking Bermuda 4/07.

I echo everything that was said about the 8/24 Legend. I was with 2 of my friends and we are in our 50's along with my 26 yr.old son and his girlfriend. We had a balcony which I will never do without again. One of the things I liked about embarkation was how we were kept informed of what was happening. We got there around 11:15 and were told that we would begin getting on the ship around 12:15 which was a little later than normal. There was a coast guard inspections and then a wedding party would get on. We were on board by 12:15. We ate in the supper club one night and would recommend that to anyone. The service and food was excellent! If you think the dining room food was good, this surpasses it by far. Each course is better than the last, especially dessert. The chef comes out at the end to ask how you liked the food. It's a dining experience like no other and takes about 2 1/2 hoours but well worth the $30. If you go and like chocolate, order the chocolate tart! I was disappointed with the waiter in the dining room. He made no effort to interact with us or participate in the singing and dancing but the food was still good. I went on the excursion in Tortola which went to Norman Island to snorkel. That was amazing and well worth the money. All in all is was a fantastic cruise and I even enjoyed the weather that last night. I would go again in a heartbeat.

Thank you for your reviews!!

Did any of you go to the Piano Bar?? Or the Disco??

Medusa's Lair is the 2 level Disco on the Legend and it is small. It is near The Truffles Dining Room at the back of the ship. You enter a bar area and there are stairs to go down to the dance floor area where there are a few tables. It is pretty small. The dance floor is maybe 30' X 30' at best. I may be overstating the measurements.
