Boston excursions?

We'll have 2 or 3 extra days in Boston at the end of a cruise in mid-October. Are there Gray Line or similar tours to Cape Cod or is it too far to go for a day, or too late in the season? We did this from Vancouver to Victoria and had only about 3 or 4 hours there in a 9 hour trip because of the ferry and the distance. But it was still worth it. Thanks!

Here's a link to Gray Line's offerings in Boston

You could get great weather in Ostober (70's) or lousy weather (rain and 40's), so it's tough to say if it's too late in the season or not.

For $90 for two people you could rent a car and do it (or anything else) yourself, I imagine.

There's some decent Boston advice here on the New England section of the Ports of Call board, too.

Hi:

The Cape can be great place to go in October because there are fewer crowds. However as previous posters have said New England weather can be unpredictable and you never know if it'll be 30 or 80. If you do go to the Cape, depending upon how far you want to go, should be a good day trip. If you want to go to the tip (Provincetown) you are looking at a minimum of a 2 + ride each way. If you stay in the Hyannis/ Falmouth area, it'll be about 1 hr. or so each way.

Depends what you're looking for. For shopping, Hyannis and Falmouth are pretty good, although the arty places in Provincetown can't be beaten on the Cape. For beaches and shorebirds, you need to go to Chatham, at least. There is no one place that "summarizes" the Cape.

You might want to look at a book on the Cape, or an on-line guide to figure out what will be most interesting to you.

Hyannis & Falmouth are very popular and touristy-as is all the Cape during peak season-however October should be much less hectic and easier to get around. You will get a good feel for the Cape but every location on the Cape has its own "aura". Both towns have some decent beaches but I don't think you'll want to do any swimming that time of year. BRRRRRRR. Provincetown is well known for its "Bohemian" atmosphere. It is interesting to see. However, depending what time you leave to get down there, you are looking at a round trip travel time of 5-6 hours so you probably won't have too much time and it would probably be the only town you'd get to visit.

My suggestion would be to stay in Boston at that time of year. Boston can be seen all year round and places like Cape Cod are much better in the nicer months. My DH and I were in Boston in October. It rained the entire time, but we still had a wonderful time. There is so much to see and do there, just make sure you bring your rain gear! That is my best recommendation. Boston deserves some time for exploration. People don't give it enough credit.

Enjoy your trip!

This is one of the best times to come on down.......Rte 6-A/Old Kings Highway is one of the most lovely routes, most homes registered on National Historic Register very QUAINT and a nice ride. Antique shops,Cemteries with oldest stones of probably one of your relatives remember it all started here.The stores and restaurants are less crowded and the pace is slower. Great place to stay is Daniel Webster Inn in Sandwich (pricey but elegant) Tugboats in Hyannis (dinning right on the harbor in Hyannis is the best for viewis and food.) Baxters as well right on the harbor. The tour boats from Hy-line take you out on harbor tours lots of interesting history also takes you by JFK home. Chatham is the best palce to stroll and lots of B&B's every where. This is a wonderful place to visit. Welcome and enjoy!!!! Capecoddah ;-}
