  1. The only safe option is layers, with a waterproof outer layer. It will be cooler at night but can be quite warm during the middle of the day. My first trip to Italy was for about six weeks, all of October and the beginning of November. I packed for fall and wound up washing and re-wearing the few lighter weight things I had with me until the last couple of weeks. Interestingly (to me, anyway) Italians going to work every morning wore fall clothing, including leather jackets, regardless of the heat. I walked away assuming that they were dressing for the season, not necessarily the weather.
  2. Interesting insight about the docking in Trieste, I don't think we've had anyone report back about being in a different part of the port (vs. the cruise terminal).
  3. As for the Florence to Ravenna leg, there are no direct trains between the two cities, all will require at least one connection. I would only consider the single connection options. The fastest options, which are two hours +/- five minutes, feature a Frecce train to Bologna (about 40 minutes) followed by a regional train to Ravenna (about one hour). The Frecce trains all have assigned seats, the regional trains are first come, first served as far as seats go.
  4. Strikes happen but are not common, however, if you're concerned you can simply purchase one of the trains that is guaranteed to go even during a strike. The current list of guaranteed trains is only valid until June 8th, when the schedule update takes effect. This is where you find the list: TABELLA_A_Treni_garantiti_DPLH.pdf (trenitalia.com) If you would like help identifying specific trains once the new list is posted, come back here and ask. As an example, in the current schedule the 9:25 train, #9308, is guaranteed.
  5. Never take the last train that would get you back in time, there is way too much risk in that and Florence is a long way from Livorno if something goes amiss. There is no need to book these trains in advance, they are regionals and there are no seat assignments so they can't sell out. You may stand for all or part of the trip, but that's the tradeoff for the savings.
  6. The answer to that (how late the shuttle buses run) depends on your cruise line, only then can answer your question with any authority. It's also up to them whether or not you are charged for the shuttle bus, the high end lines tend not to while the mid range lines do charge.
  7. There is a left luggage service at Bari Centrale train station: Deposito KiPoint Bari Centrale (kibag.it)
  8. Have you found this resource? The official "Roma" channel in Chinese on WeChat | Turismo Roma
  9. Glad to help. A bit more detail, if you're up for it. The BIRG ticket is sold by ATAC, not Trenitalia, so you don't need to wait on the line at the station ticket office, just go to the newsstand in the station, they sell it there. The choice at the end of the day is strategic. Going to Termini means a longer walk to the train (the Lazio regional tracks are three blocks from the main track head, where the metro leaves you) but it's your only chance for getting a seat. By the time the train gets to Ostiense there will be no seats left. On the other hand, going to Termini means you have to leave a bit earlier since the train leaves there earlier and you have to allow for the walk.
  10. Trenitalia, I only ever use source data if I know where to find it. Odds are you are looking at a date too far in the future. There is a schedule reset in early June, many regional trains are not loaded into the system yet after that date. I've quoted from the current schedule, which likely will not change much, if at all. The changes are generally very small, a train may move by five minutes but there are few wholesale changes in these resets.
  11. There are trains at 7:44 and 7:58 that would get you into town in time, but it would also depend on where you are meeting the tour.
  12. I don't know about taxis at the port but there is a 6 euro bus that goes from the ship to the train station: Shuttles | Port Mobility Civitavecchia To purchase train tickets, buy directly from the supplier, in this case Trenitalia: EN - Trenitalia If you decide on the IC train (the one without a change) I would consider paying a little extra for first class. On the Frecce trains I only buy first class if it's a real deal, the regular seats are just fine.
  13. It's actually quite easy to get to Naples by train, as long as you can handle your own luggage. The fast solution is a Frecce from Civitavecchia to Rome, followed by another Frecce to Naples. The slower option is an IC direct from Civitavecchia to Naples, no change en route. The fast option departs Civitavecchia at 9:16 and, after a change at Rome Termini, arrives to Napoli Cenrale at 11:33, total travel time of two hours, seventeen minutes. The slower option departs Civitavecchia at 9:24 and arrives to Napoli Centrale at 12:29, total travel time of three hours, five minutes.
  14. First, I would buy the BIRG ticket for 12 euros each, this covers your round trip regional train fare as well as the metros, buses, and trams in Rome. From St. Peter's I would walk to the Ottaviano metro station and take the train (direction Anagnina) three stops to Spagna, for the Spanish Steps. From here, walk to the Trevi Fountain, then follow the pedestrian pathway to the Pantheon. Depending on how hot it is at this point you could walk to the Colosseum or take a bus. If you walk the entire way it's just under two miles. If you take the bus you chop off the last three quarters of a mile. Once you're done, get on the metro at the Colosseum. You have a choice here, you can the metro to Termini and walk three blocks to the regional train tracks for Lazio, or and take it in the opposite direction (direction Laurentina) to Piramide and get the train back at Roma Ostiense. This map of the regional train and metro lines in Rome may be helpful: mappa ferro e tram (feb 2024) (atac.roma.it)
  15. Do you need a tour? You could just do a transfer, drop your bags off at the hotel, and head out on your own. All hotels will accept your things even if the room is not ready to check into.
