  1. If you drink more than 2 drinks per day it's definitely Italy worth it. Yes, when booking and requesting the UBP or UDP, you pay gratuities on them. Still worth it to me as our first cruise with NCL last November was the only time we had a beverage package and we feel it was the only time we could completely relax and not worry about a hefty bill at the end. We aren't heavy drinkers, but with a couple beers at the pool and a couple glasses of wine with dinner and possibly a drink of the day periodically it adds up.

  2. this is exactly what i suspected and why we never book under that deck.

thanks! we'll just bid on a balcony.... and we're lowballing anyway so we may just stay where we are.

Some of the balconies in a mini suite are larger (I've heard not all though). My husband and I agree, we are in our room to get ready and SLEEP, we love the balcony, but if we want larger there is always an entire ship. Peaceful sleep is more important.

  3. That's what I keep hearing also. We have a balcony sandwiched between floors with cabins. The mini suites are right below the Garden cafe. We had some friends upgraded to a mini suite last year and they said all they heard was chairs moving across the floor throughout the night, but heavily in the very early hours of the morning.

  4. I assume that you are talking about an older ship due to the reference to being below the Buffet. Probably Jewel Class?

Anyway, there are a few differences, but it's debatable whether it's worth the extra money. The room is a little bigger, but not much. In my opinion this is only really an issue if there are more than two people in the room. In that case the way the sofa bed works is better in the mini suites. There is also a curtain I believe (I've never actually had a room with this curtain).

The differences are fairly small though. Some differences in the bathroom for example. Personally, I only book a mini suite because there are 3 of us, and even in that case we usually go for the balcony and put up with the sofa bed issue.

Not all of the mini suites are below the buffet though. If you select carefully then you can get some decent locations. Don't go for a guarantee thought, unless you don't mind the risk of being below somewhere noisy.

Thank you! I did some research and this is pretty much what I thought. An extra $400 is not worth it to us as we don't spend a lot of time in the room. Thanks again!

  5. My in-laws cruised Freedom over 10 times. They don't like have crowds and we're in their late 70's early 80's and still loved it! You're much younger, but meant it to say the crowds didn't appear to be a problem on this ship. We have tried Freedom, but was on the Allure. We were glad we went on this size/style ship once, but we won't go again. Crowds, layout and the fact you feel like you're in a hotel and not on a ship we didn't like. Instead of having parties at the pool on deck, they do it inside the promenade which makes for a nightmare going from one side of the ship to the other or just wanting to take a stroll through it at night. You CAN'T get through. Don't even try to get an elevator after a show. We used steps the entire time. As you can tell we are not fond of the mega ships!!!!

  6. They were amazing for me! I have a life threatening peanut allergy. TA informed the cruise line and then I went to the Maitre D' as soon as we boarded. I had to choose my meals and dessert the day prior with the chef approving during the cruise. They were so strict that one night I had chose a chocolate cake with pecans and the chef said I couldn't have it. I can eat tree nuts as my allergy is to legumes. I didn't fight him as I appreciated their care and concern.

  7. Alcohol WILL be found on checked luggage as it happened to me. I wasn't trying to sneak it in, but a sister put it in my luggage when she bought she was putting it in hers (lol, her words - however we were rushing and have the same luggage). When we got on board and to our rooms I opened my luggage and I had a nasty note regarding the bottle. When the cruise was over you had to go to this private area with your nasty note to come get your alcohol stowaway. Of course I made my sister go grab HER bottle and of course I got a few free drinks out of her for being so stupid thinking she could get away with it so all ended up being a story for these past few years. As for trying to sneak alcohol in with various other things like mouthwash bottles or something else, they catch that too. We saw many things when going to pick up my sisters bottle of wine.

At check in they really scrutinize the bottles you're allowed to bring on board. It's a process that is secured quite well. So bite the bullet and bring what you can and pay for he rest. [emoji51]

  8. The lens won't affect the mega pixel count, for fish eye lens does he have a preference for canon branded lenses or does he accept third party lenses like sigma, tamron or lens baby? The latter do some more quirky styles of lenses while sigma and tamron tend to do lenses that are theoretically similar spec to the canon lenses but are usually cheaper. I would suggest checking a specialist camera site like slrgear or such like where you'll get reviews of lenses

He won't care about the Cannon brand or not. He won't want me spending $500 for a lens either. I've looked online and I have no idea how to find one as I'm not the techno person. I'd like it a surprise, but costs range from $40-$600. Crazy!!!

  9. That's what I figured. If we were going with our boys we would def go mega simply for the activities, but since it's just us, my mom and step dad I figured smaller was better. Like you I am hoping he loves it and then I can try all of them. Even willing to be nickeled and dimmed on NCL ;)

Don't read into the nickel and dime comments either. We took our first NCL last November and have two more booked. We loved our NCL cruise!!!!! First time we didn't have a large bill at the end. [emoji6]

  10. One last thought too is that you mentioned your hubby hates crowds. Again, we loved every cruise we've been on, but the one that stood out as one we wouldn't do again (although it was great to try once) is on the Mega ship Allure. We actually prefer the smaller ships. Feels a lot more relaxing and less crowded. The mega ships also have a lot more kids on them or it appears that way to us. We don't care much for booking shows ahead of time and all the mega ships require. So again, it's what experiences you're looking for and everyone is very different in thoughts for your decisions. Enjoy and have fun!!!! I was fortunate to be raised cruising. Hubby hadn't been on one and we traveled via the military for the first 20 years of our marriage. Finally for our 20th wedding anniversary we went on a cruise. He fell in love with cruising too thank goodness. We try to go as often as we can!

  11. Just a quick story,

Just had gotten of the Liberty and on the shuttle going to the airport I started talking with a lady close in age. I said wow what a great ship and crew, we had a blast, so far our favorite ship and cruise.

She looked confused and said; it was terrible, crew food and the ship in general.

This just goes to show you can't go by what people say for the most part.

We found Libert to be a magical ship and for her a nightmare.

Exactly!!!! Glass is half full or glass is half empty mentality!!!! My MIL is the glass is half empty and thank goodness I've had her son near me longer than she has! I was raised with a very positive mother and so I try to live positively. Saying that, anytime I'm on a ship out in the deep blue sea I am VERY happy! Some cruises may have had better food, better service and even a better itinerary, BUT EVERY one of them have been amazing experiences!!!!!

  12. They should give you bonus points for bringing many Royal cruisers to read about and consider NCL...because of your postings...

Lol! I got excited when my status changed and aren't a newbie any longer too!

I also agree you should get extra points with your review and bringing some other Royal Loyal over to check out NCL!!!!! I've done some verbally myself, butane a lot of catching up to do to get anywhere close to your abilities!!!!
